WORLD SCIENCE: Gospel Of Matthew Linked To Bizarre Trail Of Self-Mutilations

0
This is so strange. An online journal, the World-science.net has reported a bizarre trend of body mutilations being inflicted by some people upon themselves, in order to make the Kingdom of Heaven as allegedly instructed in the Gospel of Mathew.
Quoting medical researchers at the St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Centre in Phoenix, Arizona, in the United States, world-science.net reported overall 23 cases of people who have cut off their penises or hands or removed their eyes, because they felt they had caused them some sins. Three of these lot who self-severed their penises believed their action would make them live a sinless life and as transformed eunuchs, make them live in line with the injunction in Mathew 19:12. Four others also cut off their testicles, believing same sentiments.
The Biblical verse reads as follows:

“For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their mother’s womb; and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men; and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven’s sake. He that is able to receive it let him receive it.”
Worldscience.net reported that these incidents of self-mutilation and penis cutting happen on average of one every three years, ‘’judging by published medical reports—but that makes it no less disturbing each time for hospital staff faced with the situation.’’
One of such rare penis cutting happened last month when a 62-year-old man whom physicians dubbed Mr. P to protect his privacy, showed up at the emergency room of St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona, complaining of a case of “Matthew 19:12.” Asked to clarify, he just kept repeating the same thing: Matthew 19:12.
The nurse on duty searched the Internet for Matthew 19:12. What she read was worrisome, worldscience.net reported.
“As it quickly became clear, Mr. P had made this hospital visit unaccompanied by his penis. That, he explained, he had flushed down the toilet three days ago after severing it with a pocketknife. His testicles were also absent—removed four years earlier at Mr. P’s request by a doctor in Mexico.
“Although his speech and thoughts appeared muddled, Mr. P did state that he had “done this because his penis had caused him to sin and as an eunuch he could be closer to God as described in Matthew 19:12,” three researchers affiliated with St. Joseph’s wrote in a report describing the incident. Mr. P also claimed to have pondered the decision for months before acting.
“Mr. P. received urgent medical treatment at St. Joseph’s, including a skin graft onto the stump. He was then confined to a local psychiatric hospital by court order, leaving little but questions behind.
“The three investigators proceeded to search an online medical literature database, PubMed, for other cases of this nature. They discovered that the Bible—indeed, the Gospel of Matthew specifically— has left a trail of self- mutilations inspired largely by four of its verses.
The bloody toll listed in case reports dating back to 1967—PubMed doesn’t go back much further—included three partially or fully amputated penises; four pairs of castrated testicles; three amputated hands and 11 severely damaged eyeballs. Saws, circular saws, screwdrivers and pencils were among the tools used for the horrifying procedures, although several patients put out their eyes with their fingers alone.
“Our literature review revealed 16 patients in addition to [Mr. P] who had injured themselves in connection with specific religious text,” the researchers wrote.
Their review of the cases is published in the May 29 online issue of the research journal Psychosomatics, worldscience .net reported.
‘’All but one of the patients were diagnosed with psychiatric disorders or psychotic disorders or had substance abuse issues, they wrote; Mr. P., for example, “had a long history of severe bipolar illness marked by hyper-religious delusions.”
“And every case was connected with at least one of four verses in Matthew’s Gospel: 19:12, 18:8, 5:29 and 5:30.
“The three latter verses are more cryptic than the first, referenced by Mr. P. What they have in common is that they appear to suggest that if a hand, foot or right eye are somehow offensive, cutting them off is the way to go, because at least, that much less of the body will end up in Hell.
“Several biblical verses reference self-mutilation as metaphoric acts of sacrifice or contrition,” wrote the researchers, who included psychiatrist Jason P. Caplan of St. Joseph’s and the Creighton University School of Medicine in Omaha, Nebraska. “Some individuals may interpret these passages literally and act on them, causing significant injury and even inadvertent death.”
“Psychiatrists should be aware of the content of these four verses to aid in timely diagnosis and intervention if they were to arise in discussion with a patient,” they added. “It is interesting to note that no cases cite the Gospel of Mark despite very similar content (i.e., Mark 9:43, which reads ‘And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched’).”
“Individuals who rationalize their actions through biblical verses appear to have a series of features that make them a unique cohort with specific challenges regarding prognosis and treatment,” Caplan and colleagues wrote.
Many of them have no regrets about their actions; deliberately destroy the body part to prevent its reattachment; resist efforts to successfully reattach it when that is possible; and are uncooperative with other aspects of treatment, they added.
A 37-year-old man was quoted in the 1967 report saying: “Even if I do get certified [insane] and in the eyes of the world I am mad it is far better for me to have cleansed myself.”
“Ideas of reference (specifically, that the Bible directly refers to them) is a repeated theme in this group, underscoring a common thread of psychotic disorders,” Caplan and colleagues wrote.
“Guilt over sexual acts or desires is another recurrent theme… Recent homosexual experiences occurred in three of the cases of genital self- mutilation.” Four of the 17 self-mutilators were females; they had poked out their eyes or, in one case, amputated a hand.
Many patients had self-amputated after failed attempts to persuade doctors to do the deed, the researchers wrote, indicating a need for doctors presented with such requests to refer cases to a psychiatrist immediately.
Caplan disclosed in the paper that he is affiliated with Aliso Viejo, Calif.-based Avanir Pharmaceuticals. The report did not recommend any specific drug treatments, however. As for how Mr. P is doing currently, Caplan said he doesn’t know. “Once they leave the acute care hospital, we get no further update,” he wrote in an email.
The contentious worrisome verses in the Gospel of Mathew
Matthew 19:12
For there are some eunuchs, which were so born from their moth!er’s womb; and there are some eunuchs, which were made eunuchs of men; and there be eunuchs, which have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven’s sake. He that is able to receive it, let him receive it.
Matthew 18:8
Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire.
Matthew 5:30
And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.
Matthew 5:29
But if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell.

Iranian Pastor Now Faces Death Penalty For Rape, No Longer Apostasy (Abandoning Islam)!

1

Christian Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani who had earlier received a death sentence for apostasy (abandoning Islam)will now be put to death for several charges of rape and extortion, charges that differ greatly from his original sentence of apostasy, Iran's semi-official Fars News agency reported Friday.

Gholomali Rezvani, the deputy governor of Gilan province, where Nadarkhani was tried and convicted, accused Western media of twisting the real story, referring to him as a "rapist." A previous report from the news agency claimed he had committed several violent crimes, including repeated rape and extortion.

"His crime is not, as some claim, converting others to Christianity," Rezvani told Fars. "He is guilty of security-related crimes."

In a translated Iranian Supreme Court brief from 2010, however, the charge of apostasy is the only charge leveled against Nadarkhani.

"Mr. Youcef Nadarkhani, son of Byrom, 32-years old, married, born in Rasht in the state of Gilan is convicted of turning his back on Islam, the greatest religion the prophesy of Mohammad at the age of 19," reads the brief.

The brief was obtained by CNN from the American Center for Law and Justice and was translated from its original Farsi by the Confederation of Iranian Students in Washington.

It goes on to say that during the court proceeding, Nadarkhani denied the prophecy of Mohammad and the authority of Islam.

"He (Nadarkhani) has stated that he is a Christian and no longer Muslim," states the brief. "During many sessions in court with the presence of his attorney and a judge, he has been sentenced to execution by hanging according to article 8 of Tahrir -- olvasileh."

Rezvani, the official from Gilan province, confirmed that his execution is "not imminent" nor is it final.

He is a Zionist and has committed security-related crimes.

Gholomali Rezvani

Mohammadali Dadkhah, the pastor's lawyer, said through a translator that even in light of the Fars News report, he does not believe Nadarkhani will be put to death.

"The case is still in progress," Dadkhah said. "There's a 95% that he won't get the death penalty. Yes, I still believe that."

Dadkhah spoke briefly of the trial proceedings, stating that he presented documents to the court that should be convincing, including documents from Shi'ite leaders that state the crime does not warrant the possible punishment.

"This is a legal process that should take its course, and it should stand, on its own merits. It should succeed," Dadkhah said.

Nadarkhani, the leader of a network of house churches in Iran, was first convicted of apostasy in November 2010, a charge he subsequently appealed all the way to the Iranian Supreme Court. After four days of an appeals trial that started Sunday at a lower court in Gilan Province, Nadarkhani refused to recant his beliefs.

That said, Rezvani -- echoing an earlier report from Fars -- insisted that "Nadarkhani's crime and his death sentence have nothing to do with his beliefs.

"No one is executed in Iran for their choice of religion," he added. "He is a Zionist and has committed security-related crimes."

The possible execution of Nadarkhani, based on an assumption it is tied to his Christian belief, has elicited responses from the highest levels of the United States government, too.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton released a statement Friday that said the United States stands with "all Iranians against the Iranian government's hypocritical statements and actions."

The White House released a statement on Thursday, stating that Nadarkhani "has done nothing more than maintain his devout faith, which is a universal right for people."

"That the Iranian authorities would try to force him to renounce that faith violates the religious values they claim to defend, crosses all bounds of decency and breaches Iran's own international obligations," reads the statement.

Leonard Leo, chairman of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom, says a trial for apostasy in Iran is rare. According to him, this is the first apostasy trial since 1990.

Nadarkhani's trial and his possible execution have engaged American Christians, as well. Todd Nettleton, spokesman for Voice of the Martyrs, a Christian organization that attempts to assist with persecuted and minority churches around the world, called the news of the new charges proof that international attention on the issue is working.

"They are feeling the attention, they are feeling the weight of the eyes of the world watching how they are treating this man," Nettleton said. "I am dumbfounded, though, that at this stage in the game, this is what they would trot out."

Voice of the Martyrs manages a Facebook page that has brought a lot of attention to Nadarkhani's trial. With comments updated by the minute, thousand of people have taken to Facebook to spread the word about the pastor.

In light of this news, Nettleton said the Facebook page would continue to be active.

"I think our first response will be prayer for pastor Youcef," Nettleton said. "Prayer that justice will be done and that he will remain faithful no matter that the days ahead may bring for him."

'Christian Pastor' Faces Execution In Iran, But Will Be Spared If He Converts Back To Islam!

0

As we wait for the formal written verdict to come through, Pastor Nadarkhani's life hangs in the balance. Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW) calls for continued urgent international action to prevent his execution, which could still happen anytime.

CSW's sources in Iran have firmly denied reports that a verbal annulment of the charges and death sentence had been given. We are urging everyone not to draw conclusions until a formal written verdict is received from the court within the next week. In the meantime we need to keep up pressure on the Iranian regime to prevent his execution.

Pastor Nadarkhani received a death sentence for apostasy (abandoning Islam). Pastor Nadarkhani is currently on trial in Rasht. He has appeared in court three times this week and was asked each day to renounce his faith to secure an annulment of the apostasy charge and a lifting of the death sentence.  He refused each time.

Over 21,000 people have already emailed the Iranian embassy in the UK – add your voice to theirs and support Pastor Nadarkhani.

Use the form below to email the Iranian embassy to urge them not to go ahead with the execution. If you're not based in the UK, please send an email or phone the Iranian embassy in your own country.

The facts:

- Pastor Nadarkhani is repeatedly being asked by the court in Rasht to renounce his faith in order to avoid execution and that the last chance he will be given to do so is tomorrow (Wednesday 28th September), after which he could be executed at any time.

- Pastor Nadarkhani has been charged, and faces execution, solely on the basis of his adopting Christian faith. As such, the Islamic Republic of Iran is violating its obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). Article 18 includes a provision for the right to "have or to adopt" a religion, which has been interpreted authoritatively by the UN Human Rights Committee as including the right to change one's religion.

- Iran's constitution sanctions Christianity as a legitimate minority faith and asserts that Christians are allowed to freely carry out their religious rites. Article 23 asserts that no one may be "reprimanded simply because of having a certain belief".

Requests:

- You should address your email to "Your Excellency, the Ambassador of Iran" and don't forget to thank him for passing on your appeal, as a sign of respect.

- Express concern over the latest developments in Pastor Yousef Nadarkhani's case.

- Express your hope that the Iranian judiciary will cease to pursue their current course of action against Pastor Nadarkhani and will acquit him of all charges, in accordance with Iranian and international law.

- Request that the Ambassador passes your appeal on to the Iranian Government as a matter of urgency.

As we wait for the formal written verdict to come through, Pastor Nadarkhani's life hangs in the balance.

He added that Jonathan also approved two other airlines, K.S Travels and Empire Aviation, as standby and back-up.

The executive secretary said that the signing of the Air Charter Agreements would take place on September 15.

Opara, who said the NCNC and the NCAA would ascertain the air worthiness of the aircraft after the signing of the agreements, gave an assurance that the commission would adhere strictly to the schedule.

Pregnant Women Barred From Christian Pilgrimage!

0

AHEAD of this year's pilgrimage, Executive Secretary of the Nigerian Christian Pilgrims Commission,NCPC, Mr. Kennedy Opara, said pregnant women would not be allowed to participate in the exercise.

Speaking with newsmen, weekend, Opara said: "All married women are subjected to pregnancy test and as soon as you are tested positive, you are sent back."

On the security crisis at the West Bank, he said adequate security had been made.

He said: "We have a security monitoring committee that is working with the Nigeria Immigration Service and National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and other security agency that matters.

"We don't just give people form to fill and accept them.  We conduct a screening.  It is at this screening that we decide who will go or not go

"We may also want to know how religious you are and your appearance. These are the parametres we use to determine whether you will be a good ambassador of the country and if you are going purely for religious exercise.  In fact we try to disabuse people's minds from tourism"

"We have also finished this year's screening in all the 36 states of the federation for intending pilgrim so as to ensure that, only true Christians and good ambassadors participate," he added.
