At the resumed hearing of the case, the EFCC presented three witnesses and one exhibit, bringing to 12 witnesses and 42 exhibits presented before the court.

With the conclusion of its submissions against the two accused persons, the EFCC is awaiting the ruling of the court on the charges preferred against them.

The duo of Bankole and Nafada are being prosecuted by the EFCC for criminal breach of trust, misappropriation and theft.

The witnesses presented before the court  include Mr. Franklyn Onyesagbe;  a civil servant and a principal administrative officer with the Federal Ministry of Finance; he testified that in June 201,  his office received a letter from EFCC requesting for the procedures for lending monies by government agencies which he said his office promptly responded to.

Jonathan Appoints Interim Chairman For ICPC

0
President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Tuesday in Abuja asked a member of the Board of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) Mr. Ekpo Una Owo Nta to act as the Commission's Chairman until issues which have arisen over the nomination and confirmation of a new Chairman are resolved.
Speaking after Mr. Nta and four other new members of the ICPC Board took their oaths of office at the Presidential Villa, President Jonathan said that the swearing-in of Mr. Francis Ugochukwu Elechi whose nomination as ICPC Chairman was confirmed by the Senate had been put on hold because of certain disturbing reports.

"We are going to look into the reports we have received because we do not want to do anything that will bring a stain to a sensitive organization like the ICPC," the President said.

Restating  his Administration's determination  to curb the debilitating effects of corruption on national development, President Jonathan said that due care would be taken to ensure that only the most appropriate  individuals are appointed to positions of influence and authority in the country's anti-corruption agencies.

"Until the monster called corruption is dealt with, we will not assume our rightful place in the comity of nations," the President.

He therefore urged members of the new ICPC Board to collaborate effectively with the EFCC in the prosecution of the national war against corruption.

Responding on behalf of other members of the ICPC Board who were sworn-in today, Mr. Nta thanked the President for giving them the opportunity to serve the nation, assuring him that they will do their best to carry the war against corruption forward.

Nigeria’s crude oil to dry up in 37 years, except…

0
EXCEPT the Federal Government urgently creates aggressive policies of hydrocarbon reserves replacement, geologists and other stakeholders in the oil sector have raised an alarm that the nation's crude oil reserve would be totally depleted in the next 37 years precisely by 2048.
Stakeholders are currently worried that with a production output of 2.5 million barrels of oil equivalent per day, Nigeria currently depletes about 1 billion barrels of crude oil annually from its 37.2 billion barrels of hydrocarbon reserves.

This was the position of Mr. Guy Maurice, Managing Director of Total Upstream Companies in Nigeria, at the opening of the 29th Annual International Conference and Exhibition of the Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists, in Lagos, yesterday.

According to him, policies must be put in place for industry to gain a lot of time in the contracting cycle, especially by drastically shortening and reducing the time to access rigs for exploration in the Nigerian waters, "the country should make reserves replacement a priority.

"If we take a critical look at perspectives for growing reserves in the next decade, the answer is exploration, exploration and more explorations to run parallel to development projects, which are also becoming more and more expensive to execute, due to slippages in complex contractual environment, couple with security challenges."

Several stakeholders and operators in the nation's oil and gas sector have lamented the highly noticeable absence of the Federal Government, especially the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs Diezani Allison-Madueke and the Group Managing Director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, Mr. Austen Oniwon from the opening ceremony.

The conference which had the theme "Perspectives on Growing Hydrocarbon Reserves in the Next Decade" is one of the annual major conferences and exhibition in the oil and gas industry.

65 Years Old Man Tortured To Death by police in Minna

0
ANI Mohammed, 65 has been tortured to death while undergoing an interrogation in the hands of police in Minna, Niger State, sources told Daily Trust.
The deceased, who was arrested two days before the fateful day, was tortured by men of the Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) of the state police command.

Late Sani Mohammed was arrested in connection with the theft of N1.7 million at Bomas Supermarket in Minna that was said to have been perpetrated by two staff of the super market who confessed to have given half of the stolen money to the deceased.

The deceased was said to be a dry cleaner, who enjoyed high patronage from the staff of Bomas supermarket and that he got into trouble when the stolen money was hidden in a bag of clothes brought to him for dry cleaning by one of the suspects.

When late Sani discovered that there was a bag containing a huge amount of money in the clothes brought to him for dry cleaning, he drew the attention of the man that brought the clothes and that in appreciation the man gave him N5,000.

Our correspondent gathered that the director of the supermarket reported the case to police and that led to the arrest of all the staff of the super market.

Upon interrogation, two of the suspects confessed to have stolen the money and further claimed to have given N700, 000 to late Mohammed.

The deceased was said to have denied the allegation but insisted that he was given only N5,000 in appreciation for his honesty.

Contacted over the matter, the State Command's Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Richard Oguche said, late Sani Mohammed was a robbery suspect, who was arrested along side two others, adding that the deceased died of cardiac arrest as confirmed when he was taken to the hospital.

Conrad Murray DENIED Probation! Sentenced To Four Years In Prison!

0
It's over!
Despite pleas from his mother and loved once earlier today, Dr. Conrad Murray has been denied probation in the Michael Jackson involuntary manslaughter trial.
He has been sentenced to
 serve four years in prison!
Judge Michael Pastor threw the book at Dr. Conrad Murray, sentencing him to 4 YEARS IN PRISON.  But Murray will not spend a single day in prison because of a new California law.  He'll serve his time in L.A. County Jail.  And in jail, at most Murray will only serve half the sentence.

The judge was angry, talking repeatedly about Dr. Murray's documentary in which he laid the blame at Michael Jackson's doorstep.  The documentary clearly weighed in the judge's decision to give Murray the max.

As for restitution, Judge Pastor ordered Dr. Murray to pay "appropriate restitution" to the Estate and to MJ's kids at a later date ... but the judge seemed dubious about the $100 million request by the prosecution.

Judge Pastor ruled Murray must pay an $800 fine, a $30 court security fee, and a $40 criminal conviction assessment.

Judge Pastor said, "There are those who feel Dr. Murray is a saint.  There are those who feel he's the devil.  He is neither.  He's a human being."

Judge Pastor says it's irrelevant to him that Michael might have met this fate with some other doctor.  The fact is, Pastor said, Michael Jackson died because of the actions of ... Dr. Murray."

The judge said he looked at Murray's whole life, and he was impressed.  But he added Dr. Murray's recklessness with Jackson overshadowed the doc's good deeds, calling the treatment, "a cycle of horrible medicine."

Call Logs Links Boko Haram Suspect To UN House Bombing

0
SECURITY agents have uncovered a new lead linking a detained suspect, Ali Sauda Umar Konduga (a.k.a Usman Al-Zawahiri), to the bombing of the UN House and the Police Headquarters in Abuja.
Konduga has named Senator Ali Ndume as one of the sponsors of the Boko Haram sect. Ndume and Konduga have been arraigned before an Abuja Chief Magistrate’s Court for criminal intimidation. Konduga got a nine-year jail term. Ndume is in the custody of the State Security Services (SSS).

Security reports at the Presidency have foreclosed moves to “politicise” Ndume’s arrest, The Nation learnt.

A source said the screening of Konduga’s call logs has provided fresh clues on the bombing of the UN House and the Police Headquarters.

The August 26 explosion at the UN House killed 23 people; 70 others were injured.

The SSS arrested Babagana Ismail Kwaljima (a.k.a Abu Summaya) and Babagana Mali (a.k.a Bulama) over the UN House attack. It declared a Boko Haram leader, Mamman Nur, wanted .

But the fresh clues indicate that more suspects were involved in the “plot”.

A source, who pleaded not to be named said more suspects are being sought, following the clues.

“At the end of the day, the SSS will determine whether Konduga will still stand trial separately for the two incidents. But we have recorded a breakthrough,” the source said, adding:

“In fact, prior to the bombings, there were telephone calls between Konduga and some highly–placed people. The facts suggest that Konduga has been a key member of the Boko Haram sect, contrary to insinuations in some quarters.”

On Ndume’s fate, the source said: “Instead of reading political meaning into it, those aggrieved should be at the court to go through security reports on him. These will be tendered in court.

“There is no basis for political witch-hunt. We have arraigned him in court; he remains a suspect. The onus is on him to prove beyond reasonable doubt before the court that he had no link with Konduga. We cannot pronounce him guilty.”

The source said: “We cannot join issues with any party but we have security reports on Ndume. We have his statement on oath and the Presidency was in the picture of our findings.

“We won’t stoop so low to release the security reports, but the court is there for all to go and witness the trial, based on our findings and counter-deposition by the Senator.”

Ndume’s family, it was learnt, had wanted to take up issues with the SSS on Friday at a news conference, but the session was called off at the instance of the Senator.

Another source said: “Nigerians should ask Ndume why he asked his family to shelve the Friday briefing. He must have had some information which they do not have.”

Do You Forget Important Things Easily? Here Is How To Repair Your Memory

0
Occasionally sudden memory lapses — particularly in someone young — can be a result of something else that needs investigating, says Michael Gross, clinical director of Neurophysiology at the Clementine Churchill Hospital, Middlesex.

Here the experts detail some of the possible causes of your embarrassing memory lapses, and what you should do about them.

  • NOT ENOUGH STOMACH ACID
Vitamin B12, found in foods such as meats, fish and dairy products, is known for its important role in producing red blood cells, but it's also thought to be linked to healthy memory.

A recent U.S. study found that a lack of vitamin B12 was linked to memory and thinking problems. The theory is that B12 plays a role in protecting the myelin sheath — an insulating layer around nerves. Any damage to this and the nerve impulses slow down, affecting memory, among other things.
Vitamin B12 found in meat is thought to be linked to healthy memory
'Vitamin B12 deficiency occurs when the body fails to absorb enough of the vitamin though the small intestine,' says Dr Anton Emmanuel, a gastroenterologist at University College Hospital, London.
The nutrient is found in foods such as meat, fish and dairy products, so vegetarians need to be careful to ensure they are getting enough.
Other possible causes include pernicious anaemia (an autoimmune condition in which the body starts attacking the cells in the stomach, preventing the absorption of nutrients) and Crohn's disease (a form of inflamatory bowel disease that also affects nutrient absorption).
A more common trigger is simply getting older — high levels of stomach acid are essential for the body to absorb the vitamin, but as we age our stomachs produce less.
This can lead to older people being mistakenly diagnosed with dementia when they're actually suffering from B12 deficiency. This can be detected with a blood test — and taking a supplement will rectify the problem promptly.
  • HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE
If you're under 45 and forgetful, it might be worth having your blood pressure taken.
In a study at the University of Alabama, those with high blood pressure were more likely to have problems with memory and thinking skills than those with normal blood pressure.
Indeed, the higher the reading, the more likely the problem. High blood pressure damages the inner linings of the arteries, ultimately making the artery walls thick and stiff.
'This narrowing of vessels reduces the amount of blood that flows to the brain, leading to the hippocampus, which plays a role in memory, not working properly,' says Fenella Kirkham, professor of paediatric neurology at University Hospitals Southampton.
The good news is it's never too late to stop any decline. Exercising, eating healthily and losing weight will all improve your memory — and health.
  • UNDERACTIVE THYROID
If you're tired, gaining weight, depressed and feel your memory isn't what it was, it could be as a result of hypothyroidism, a condition that affects 15 in every 1,000 women.
The condition, which comes on gradually over months, occurs when the thyroid gland fails to produce a hormone known as thyroxine.
'This hormone plays a critical role in the amount of energy the body uses. If you don't have enough, everything to do with the body slows down, including the brain's function, having an effect on recall and memory,' says Richard Ross, professor of endocrinology at the University of Sheffield.
Causes of an underactive thyroid include auto-immune conditions such as Hashimoto's disease, when the body starts attacking itself, a virus or sometimes medication.
A simple blood test is used to diagnose the condition, then hormone replacement tablets, called levothyroxine, will be prescribed and symptoms can improve rapidly.
  • STATINS
While there are reports that these cholesterol-lowering pills improve the memory, a recent review of studies by the highly regarded Cochrane Library suggested the opposite.
Researchers examined data from 14 drugs trials involving 34,000 patients and found some patients taking the drugs had problems remembering recent events.
'Why some people have problems and others don't may simply be genetic,' says Dr Gross.
However, what is known is that certain statins are more likely to cause problems than others.
The more fat-soluble the statin (which means it passes through cell membranes quickly and hangs around in the body's fat continuing to have an effect), the greater propensity it has to cross the barrier that protects the brain from any poisons or toxins that may be in the blood. Simvastatin is the most fat-soluble of the statins.
  • MENOPAUSE
Becoming forgetful at a certain age is a common complaint for women. A study at the University of California confirms that dwindling oestrogen levels seem to be a problem — particularly just before the menopause begins, a stage known as the perimenopause.
'Oestrogen may have a protective effect on the neurotransmitters — chemical messengers in the brain,' says Professor Ross.
Fortunately, the memory loss isn't permanent. Taking oestrogen or progesterone hormones — used in hormone replacement therapy — during this time will help.
  • MIGRAINE
If you're prone to migraines, you may be at risk of transient global amnesia, which is more common in the over-50s
If you're prone to migraines, you may be at risk of transient global amnesia, which is more common in the over-50s.
Essentially, your recall of recent events, up to the previous 24 hours or so, vanishes for several hours — you cannot remember where you are or how you got there, but you  do remember who you are and  the people you know well.
'This amnesia is thought to occur as a result of a defect in a gene that  can cause the spread of nerve impulses in the brain,' says Professor Kirkham.
'Along with triggering migraines, these may also temporarily paralyse the memory — though not necessarily at the same time.'
As with migraines, sudden immersion in cold or hot water, acute emotional distress or even sexual intercourse may set off these cortical-spreading depressions.
Fortunately, this is not a common problem and episodes tend to occur only once — memory should start to return within 24 hours.
  • LONG-HAUL FLIGHTS
Long-haul travel can leave you feeling shabby and fuzzy. 'It's thought the problems all arise from a lack of consistent sleep,' said Professor Kirkham
Anyone who has flown long-haul knows only too well how shabby and fuzzy this can leave you feeling.
But a recent study at the University of California indicates that those memory and learning problems can continue long after your return to a regular 24-hour schedule.
'It's thought the problems all arise from a lack of consistent sleep,' says Professor Kirkham.
'When you sleep, the hippocampus — the part of the brain that plays an intricate role in memory processing — spends its time filing memories.
In other words, if you have less sleep than you need, memory problems can arise. As a result this also occurs in those with severe exhaustion and sleep problems, such as insomnia.'
  • CHEMOTHERAPY
Yet another addition to the list of unpleasant side-effects of chemotherapy is possible memory loss.
'Chemo brain' — a term used to describe the foggy thinking and memory lapses following chemo sessions — affects up to half of breast cancer patients.
It's thought chemotherapy affects healthy brain cells, knocking their ability to function properly.
In a study at Stanford University in California, researchers discovered that breast cancer patients who had undergone the treatment had significantly less activity in parts of the brain responsible for memory and planning compared to those who were not treated.
A study at Rochester Medical Center and Harvard Medical School linked the widely used chemotherapy drug 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) to the deterioration of healthy brain cells.
'It is clear that in some patients, chemotherapy appears to trigger a degenerative condition in the central nervous system,' says the lead author Mark Noble.
Generally the problem is reversible — memory will get better. However, problems have been known to last for up to ten years.
Taking aspirin — which maintains or increases blood flow to the brain cells, increasing their oxygen supply — might be a way of preventing or treating chemo brain.  However, you should always consult your doctor before taking aspirin regularly.
  • PREGNANCY
It's thought lifestyle and the disruption and loss of routine associated with pregnancy may be to blame for pregnant woman having a worse memory
Women frequently complain of 'baby brain' during pregnancy.
In a new Australian study, researchers compared the memory performances of pregnant and non-pregnant women.
Results showed the pregnant women had worse memories, particularly in tasks such as remembering new phone numbers or people's names.
It's thought lifestyle and the disruption and loss of routine associated with pregnancy may be to blame, says Julie Henry, a psychologist at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, who conducted  the research.
  • ANAESTHETICS
The joy of an anaesthetic is that you don't remember a thing when you wake up — but, it seems, that memory loss could go on for longer than you'd expect.
Though it's common to have problems remembering things a few days after the op, in postoperative cognitive decline, problems can last up to a year.
Indeed, in one study at the University Hospital of Florida, 40 per cent of older patients (over 60) had such post-op problems, and 12.7 per cent still suffered problems after three months.
Other symptoms include problems with concentration and attention. The cause is unclear.
Gases used in anaesthetics may interfere with nerve impulses in the hippocampus.
'Surgery itself may also play a role in the memory loss, causing a profound inflammatory response throughout the body, including the brain,' says Professor Kirkham.
Aspirin, though controversial, may help improve symptoms by reducing inflammation. Otherwise, just wait for problems to improve.
  • EPILEPSY
the brain condition that causes seizures and affects around 500,000 Britons can be a contributory factor in memory loss.
During a seizure, electrical impulses in the brain are disrupted. If these attacks occur in certain areas of the brain — such as the hippocampus — they can cause problems that continue after the seizure has finished.
'Treated promptly and effectively, stopping the seizures with medication such as lamotrigine and  levetiracetam, there should be no long-term effects,' says Professor Kirkham.
  • ARTHRITIS OR ASTHMA DRUGS
Corticosteroids are drugs taken by countless thousands for a variety of reasons from asthma  to arthritis.
Long-term use in high doses, for six months or more, could lead to problems with recall, says Stephen Bazire, honorary professor at the University of East Anglia's School of Pharmacy.
Corticosteroids can actually kill off brain cells, shrinking the brain and in particular the hippocampus.
'Switching steroids may help (there are nine different types) — though depending on how serious the memory loss is, your doctor may think the benefits outweigh the risks,' says Mr Bazire.
This kind of memory loss is rare.
  • DEPRESSION
Depression is linked to low levels of brain chemicals such as serotonin and norepinephrine, which relay messages.
This can also have an effect on the memory.
'Treating the depression successfully — whether that entails medication or talking therapies — should also help relieve any memory problems,' says Dr Gross

Senate Approves Anti-Gay Marriage Bill

0
Today the Senate voted to criminalize gay marriage, instituting prison terms of more than a decade for violations in Nigeria.

The bill heads to the House of Representatives, who have to approve the bill and send it to President Goodluck Jonathan for his signature before it becomes a law. However, public opinion - and lawmakers' calls for even harsher penalties for being gay - shows wide support for the measure in the deeply religious nation.
"Such elements in society should be killed," Sen. Baba Dati said during the debate.

Under the measure, couples who marry could face up to 14 years in jail, and witnesses or anyone who helps couples marry could be sentenced to 10 years behind bars. That's an increase over the bill's initial penalties.

Homosexuality is already technically illegal in Nigeria, a country evenly divided between Christians and Muslims that is nearly universally opposed to homosexuality. In the areas in Nigeria's north where Islamic Shariah law has been enforced for about a decade, gays and lesbians can face death by stoning.

"Clash Of The Titans": Obasanjo And Atiku In Yet Another Battle

0
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has advised former President Obasanjo to defend himself against the allegation of lobbying the former George Bush administration to support his unpopular third term ambition in 2006 which was contained in the recently published memoirs of former Secretary of State, Condoleezza Rice.
Obasanjo told the National Mirror newspaper that his former deputy destroyed his own chance of succeeding him in 2007.

Also Obasanjo said in the interview that Atiku is unreliable and that he lacks the vision, orientation and experience to step into his shoes.
Describing the allegation as diversionary in a statement issued by his media office in Abuja, the former Vice President said he was unbelievably shocked by the distortion of truth by Obasanjo who is supposed to speak honestly like a statesman.
The former US Secretary of State was quoted on page 638 of her memoir titled "No Higher Honour" as saying "In 2006 when President Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria sidled up to President Bush and suggested that he (Obasanjo) might change the constitution so that he could serve a third term, President Bush told him not to do it."
In Bush's words "You have served your country well. Now turn over power and become a statesman."
Reacting to these allegations, however, the former Vice President said his problems with Obasanjo had nothing to do with these charges.
Instead, Atiku recalled that his opposition to Obasanjo's third term ambition was the beginning of his travails.
Atiku maintained that Obasanjo had no succession plan from day one, and that he wanted to be Nigeria's Robert Mugabe.
The former Vice President also accused Obasanjo of handing over power to the late President Umaru Yar'Adua reluctantly as a face-saving measure following the collapse of his third term ambition on the floor of the Senate on May 16th 2006.
The Turaki Adamawa explained that he opposed tenure elongation of Obasanjo on the grounds that the constitution should not be amended for the sake of granting one man's life term ambition.

Nigerian IMMIGRATION OFFICER Samuel Shoyeju JAILED OVER ILLEGAL UK VISAS

0
Nigerian Samuel Shoyeju, an immigration officer, has been jailed for seven years for falsely granting indefinite leave to remain to 44 non-EU residents who were not entitled to stay in the country.
Only 14 of the false letters that he issued have been recovered, meaning most of the recipients have not been identified.
Judge Christopher Mitchell said the case threatened to undermine the hard-won reputation for "probity and honesty" of British civil servants.
He added: "Actions like yours call into question in the public mind the entire integrity of the immigration system when, at the present time, immigration and immigration decisions are extremely sensitive."
Basildon Crown Court heard the "treasured status" allowed immigrants to live, work and claim benefits as well as applying for full British citizenship.
The recipients, who are all believed to be Nigerian, ranged from asylum seekers to those who had already identified as "overstayers".
Prosecutor Lucy Kennedy said: "Not all of those people have been traced."
She added: "This case has cost the taxpayer a significant amount of money, both in terms of the investigation and in terms of those who remain in the country untraced.
"He abused the system he was employed to protect and he did so for his own selfish reasons, not out of some misguided sense of altruism.
"It was a breach of trust which will no doubt undermine confidence in public servants employed to protect UK borders."
Shoyeju, who worked as a line manager in Croydon, amended and destroyed electronic and paper records to cover his tracks.
He used colleagues' date stamps and accessed secure databases under other people's names to divert attention away from himself.
When his home computer was searched a file called "Nigerian names" was found, relating to those he planned to grant visas to.
He was able to use a generic computer log-in to transfer secure files from Home Office systems without being identified, Ms Kennedy said.
"That system relies on the integrity of immigration officials themselves," Ms Kennedy added.
"He had been employed to uphold immigration rules but, using his intricate inside knowledge of the system, he deliberately did the opposite."
