Iyeoka Okoawo —A Restless Soul In Search Of Her Roots

Iyeoka Okoawo —A Restless Soul In Search Of Her Roots
Her story is unique. She started singing from age five. Though one of her elder brothers, Okodua, always taunted the small girl for humming what he considered 'undecipherable babblings,' that little girl stuck to her guns.
Welcome to the world of a songbird Iyeoka Okoawo. Born in Houston, Massachusetts in 1975 to Nigerian parents from Edo State, her story is that of a restless soul in search of her essence. She happened to have found that essence through music and poetry.
Her homecoming a week before the protests that greeted the removal of oil subsidy on January 1, 2012 had served as an opener for her. She captures her experience vividly: "Being at home in Edo State for one whole week, listening to different people talk about the fuel subsidy made me appreciate what the people here feel and the challenges facing them."
Iyeoka, the third among four children, combines music and poetry, an emerging trend in the creative world, seamlessly like water coursing through its tributaries.
Having performed in various cities in United States of America, United Kingdom, among others, she believes there are still more grounds to conquer.
Her stopover also in Lagos on Tuesday was to introduce her works to Nigerian audience and connect with her roots.
She says, "There is something unique about the culture of the Edo people. It is rich and my mother is doing a good job on me, in teaching me some of our music. These I am taking back to the United States of America.
"Though the people may not understand the language, I will translate it, and once they understand what I am talking about, we take it up from there. I want to elevate my roots and showcase it to the world."
Iyeoka admits she had to quit her six-figure thriving pharmacy job in Boston Medical Centre in January 2010, and she has no cause to regret that action.
She says, almost boasting, "I took that decision when I went on private retreat in Hawaii. It was a product of a deep- thought. I had asked myself: 'Is pharmacy what you want to do all your life?'
"As I returned to the States after that retreat, I resigned and took to music and poetry full time. It has paid my bills."
With four albums in her kitty, viz Black and Blues, Hum The Bass Line, Live at Ktuh Hawaii and Say Yes, she says her parents are great influence on her life.
The 37-year-old singer also pours encomium on one Babatunde Olatunji, who she describes as 'my teacher' for the gift of a drum, which she takes everywhere she goes.
What about marriage? Iyeoka has an answer: " I am not married but I am taken already."

Chinua Achebe Battles 50 Cent Over 'Things Fall Apart' Film Title!

2

50 Cent has recently faced a legal challenge from Nigerian author Chinua Achebe.

One of the most powerful performers in the United States, 50 Cent has made a fortune out of his image as a reformed criminal. Boasting genuine gunshot wounds, there are few who would cross the media mogul.

However Nigerian author Chinua Achebe seems to be made of sterner stuff. The author is one of the finest writers in the English language, with countless awards and seminal works to his name.

Achebe was recently forced to act after 50 Cent confirmed that he was working on a film titled 'Things Fall Apart'. The rapper was set to write and star in the movie, which is already on the release schedules.

Of course, 'Things Fall Apart' is far from an original title. The phrase was coined by WB Yeats and used by Chinua Achebe as the title of his 1958 novel, a savage indictment of the Imperial experience.

Setting his legal team on the rapper's trail, 50 Cent offer Chinua Achebe $1 million for use of the title because - according to a source - "50 Cent prefers to keep the title".

Replying, the writer's legal representatives stated that "the novel with the said title was initially produced in 1958 (that is 17 years before rapper 50 Cent was born), listed as the mostly read book in modern African literature, and won't be sold for even 1 Billion Dollars".

Forced to back pedal, 50 Cent consulted his legal team. Assured that victory was out of sight, the rapper was forced to change the title of his forthcoming picture to 'All Things Fall Apart' (via Broadway Ghana).

Of course, this isn't the first time 'Things Fall Apart' has been used in a hip hop context. The phrase also lent itself to the title of The Roots' 1998 masterpiece, although the Philadephia outfit intended this as a conscious nod towards the Nigerian author.

Nigeria Songstress & Award Winning Poet, Iyeoka Ivie Okoawo Visits Wellesley College!

2

Iyeoka, a Nigerian-born slam poet, 2010 TED Global Fellow and recording artist will bring her lyrical and musical talents to Wellesley College Sept. 22. The event is open to the public and begins at 7 p.m. in the Multifaith Center, Reception Area. Her tunes are jazzy, soulful and catchy, reminiscent of Amy Winehouse and Nina Simone. But most seem to carry a positive, hopeful message as well.

The "Yellow Brick Road Song" features hip hop artist B.Cap,  and is the first song on Iyeoka's album, "Say Yes." Incidentally, it's also the theme song for the USA network show, "Fairly Legal."
