1

The winners of the Big Brother Amplified has emerged, and guess what? My very dear self-acclaimed 'Gangstress' Karen Igho from Nigeria, and Wendall, from Zimbabwe emerged as the winners of the U$200 000 first prizes.

Karen as we all know was everyone's favourite with her down to earth confrontational style which I kinda love though. Lol!

The Nigerian bombshell is proof that dynamite does come in small packages and that the future for this special child of Africa can only be bright.

Also, Wendall the quietly spoken gentleman from Harare, startled us all by finishing in joint first place.

And this was how

Adenuga Moves To Take Over NITEL For $450m!

0

Business magnate Dr. Mike Adenuga has made overtures to the federal government to acquire the state-owned telecommunications company, NITEL and its mobile subsidiary, MTel, for $450 million under the willing buyer-willing seller basis to be undertaken by the Bureau of Public Enterprises, in a last ditch effort to sell the troubled telecom firm.

In the last 10 years, the BPE has made five unsuccessful attempts to privatise NITEL, the last of which was a 2009 tender when New Generation Limited and Omen International emerged the preferred and reserve bidders respectively but failed to pay for the enterprise despite repeated extensions granted both firms to do so.

The willing buyer-willing seller negotiated basis is a process that allows the BPE to receive tenders for an enterprise and hold negotiations on the terms and conditions of a sale with a prospective bidder or bidders until an agreement is reached that is suitable to both parties.
This will be Adenuga's second attempt to acquire NITEL in less than three years. In 2008, Globacom tried to participate in the bid round for the company but was disqualified by BPE after it was advised by the Nigerian Communications Commission that none of the major telecom operators could bid for NITEL as a whole.

This will be the second time that the Globacom boss is attempting to purchase NITEL.

Politician Escapes Mob Attack Over Alleged Hypnotism!

0

A ward chairman of a political party was almost lynched for allegedly hypnotising three people.
It was gathered that trouble started for the man when he was chased by colleagues of a commercial motorcyclist, who was knocked down by the vehicle he was riding in.

The politician was eventually arrested with the help of policemen around Ifako area.

But his pursuers were shocked to find three of the occupants of the space wagon car unconscious.

The okada riders and  other sympathisers who suspected that the man might have abducted the threesome for ritual purposes attempted to lynch him, but were stopped by policemen, who thereafter took him and the occupants to Ifako Police Station.

The divisional police officer in charge of the police station, who reportedly quizzed the suspect, was said to have ordered that the "victims" be taken to Gbagada General Hospital.

Reports had it that the the "victims"  claimed to have no knowledge of what had happened to them, after they finally woke  up at the hospital.

A police source revealed that the suspect had been released on official recognition, but was asked to report to the station on a daily basis.

The source said when quizzed, the chairman claimed that the occupants had inhaled the fume from the exhaust pipe of his vehicle which had cut off and which he had retrieved and kept inside the vehicle, as he was using air conditioner.

According to the source, the police were investigating the matter, as "we do not want to believe any story."

When contacted, the state Commissioner of Police, Yakubu Alkali and the Public Relations Officer, Samuel Jinadu, refused to comment on the incident.

'Fake Camp': The Great NYSC Crime Cover-Up!

1

Almost a year after officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) arrested and prosecuted 69 fake National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members rounded up at an illegal NYSC orientation camp in Keffi, Nassarawa State. The suspected organisers of the camp, believed to be high-ranking NYSC officials, are still walking free and are being shielded from investigation and prosecution by the leadership of the service, NEXT investigation has shown.

Highly-placed sources in the NSCDC and the police said while the 'fake corpers' who are more or less victims of the corrupt and mercantile tendencies of some NYSC officials, have been disgraced and convicted, the NYSC director-general, Maharazu Tsiga, a serving Brigadier-General in the Nigerian Army, has made it impossible for operatives of the NSDC and the police to bring the suspected masterminds behind the illegal camp to book.

NEXT learnt that the NYSC boss has used his military links to block investigations into the matter and has spurned requests by the police to interrogate some of his staff implicated in the scandal.

The 69 'fake corpers' including a nursing mother, were apprehended on July 26, 2010 when NSCDC operators swooped on their camp in a remote location in Nassarawa State. They were immediately arraigned before a Keffi Upper Area Court, which, in August 2010, sentenced each of them to three years imprisonment, with an option of a N10,000 fine.

The culprits, who acknowledged that they were not eligible to participate in the one-year compulsory national service, however confessed that they each paid between N70,000 and N150,000 to suspected NYSC agents across the country to procure fake NYSC call-up letters to the fake camp, believed by security agents to have been in existence for many years before last year's raid.

SHOCKING: A Preacher's Wife Is Dead And The Other Woman Reveals His Dark, Murderous Secrets

0

What's this world turning into?
Linda and Jim Dulin are convinced that their daughter, Kari, was murdered by the man they once embraced as a son-in-law: Baptist preacher Matt Baker.

"Kari was a very good minister's wife. Faith was very important in her life," Linda tells "48 Hours Mystery" correspondent Erin Moriarty. "This was a man who was capable of the ultimate evil."

Matt has always claimed that his wife committed suicide, just as he told the 911 operator a little after midnight on April 8, 2006.

911 Operator: This is 911, do you have an emergency?

Matt Baker: Yes, I think my wife just committed suicide.

He said he went out to get a video and gas for his car. When he arrived home, he found his wife lifeless on the bed... an empty bottle of Unisom and a suicide note on the table.

"I - felt to see if she was breathing. She was not. I shook her, she didn't answer," Matt recalls.

Their daughters, Kensi, 9, and Grace, 5, were asleep in nearby bedrooms.

Matt says it was because of another daughter, Kassidy, that Kari took her own life. He says she had never stopped grieving for Kassidy, who had a brain tumor and died seven years earlier.

"That was a tough time for her... every year," he tells Moriarty. "It never got better for her."

But Kari's mother, and her family, did not believe that Kari would have abandoned her living children. The suicide note was typed - even the signature. Linda grew more suspicious when she discovered that there were numerous phone calls between Matt and a young parishioner named Vanessa Bulls.

"We talked a lot. But I talked to a lot of friends," Matt says. When asked if he had an affair with Vanessa, he says, "Oh, no. I did not. There was never any relationship at all other than a friendship."

Matt certainly didn't seem like he had anything to hide. He voluntarily spoke with the Hewitt Police a few months after Kari died.

"And so since then it has grown into a good friendship... and I know for a fact my in-laws don't like that," he tells police.

And he wasn't shy about airing his grievances against the Dulins, who had been pushing the police to investigate their daughter's death.

"I think they're mad that they think I'm moving on - I guess they think I'm moving on too quickly..." he tells police.

Matt patiently answered every question they posed.

Hewitt Police: She was lying in the bed?

Matt Baker: Mm-hmm.

Hewitt Police: Was she clothed?

Matt Baker: She was not - she had - I'm trying to remember. No. She was naked.

The police also questioned Vanessa, who denied any affair with Matt.

Hewitt Police: Did you ever meet him romantically?

Vanessa Bulls: NO.

Hewitt Police: Never, OK.

And that, it seemed, was the end of the police investigation.

Linda was frustrated and felt that the only way she'd know what happened to Kari was to find out herself. So she hired attorney Bill Johnston and his team of investigators.

"We became convinced that he done it," Johnston tells Moriarty. Investigator John Bennett adds "It seemed like every expert we talked to told us that it could not happen the way Matt Baker said it had."

Matt said he was only gone for about 40 minutes, but Kari's body showed signs of lividity, the pooling of blood after death. The experts said it was unlikely that Kari could have ingested drugs, died and reached that state in such a short period of time. Moreover, records salvaged from Matt's workplace server were incriminating.

"We got to parts of it that showed he had search terms like 'overdose' and 'death by sleeping pills,'" Johnson says.

Johnston felt that police dropped the ball, but he was hamstrung. There was no autopsy and the death was classified as suicide.

"There was a guy who was holding a bible on Sunday telling everybody how to live and he'd murdered his wife," Johnson says. "Every minute that went by, Baker was closer to getting away with it. And he knew it."

Johnston turned to Matt Cawthon, an old friend who was a member of the Texas Rangers - the statewide law enforcement team. Cawthon agreed, unofficially, to help.

"The next step," Cawthon says, "was to obtain records from telephones. Any other type of records that we might need."

To get those documents, Cawthon needed the district attorney's help, but was turned down flat. "I could not understand why I could not have the basic tools that I needed to continue with this," he says.

Cawthon persisted and finally convinced authorities to conduct an autopsy - three months after Kari died. It was too late to test for drugs in her blood, but they did find Unisom in her muscle tissue, along with traces of Ambien, a drug Kari was not known to take. The manner of death was changed from suicide to undetermined.

In September 2007, a year-and-a-half after Kari died, the police now felt they had a homicide on their hands. Matt Baker was arrested and charged with murder. He was released on bond, thanks to powerhouse attorney Guy James Gray, who took the case pro bono.

"I only take the cases that I believe in with all my heart. And this is one of them," Gray tells Moriarty.

And, Gray says, this is an injustice.

"You can't go forward with a murder case unless you can establish that it is a homicide. So, you have to establish cause of death," he explains. "And that, forensically, is just not possible in this case."

Anniversary of the death of Boko Haram’s leader: FG Issues Security Alert!

0
The Federal Government has ordered high security alert ahead of the anniversary of the death of Boko Haram’s leader, Mallam Mohammed Yusuf who was killed in Police custody on July 31, 2010.

Sources in the administration confirmed to Sunday Tribune that the alert actually went out some weeks ago when it was discovered that members of the sect were planning big to celebrate the anniversary of the killing of their leader.

It was gathered that counter terrorism experts in the State Security Services(SSS) and the Nigerian Intelligence Agency(NIA) had made discoveries following the release of the alert.

Informed sources, however, confirmed to Sunday Tribune that the administration has however renewed the security alert after operatives had cut off the plot to unleash bombs on some strategic installations.

Reports had indicated that members of the sect had planned to detonate bombs in targetted installations in seven states including Borno, Niger, kano, Kaduna, Katsina, Bauchi and Gombe to mark the anniversary of July 31.

It was also discovered by operatives that members of the sect plan to detonate bombs around pipelines of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation(NNPC) and Kaduna bridge which is said to contain some installations.

Following leakage of the plot, the operatives were said to have mounted series of security checks around the targetted states and NNPC installations.

It was however gathered that there still exists threats to some key installations in Abuja, Kaduna and Bauchi.

It was gathered that the government was told that the sect members might have ceased operations in Abuja in recent weeks to give a false sense of securtiy such that they would be able to catch the security operatives napping.

A source said that the government has therefore directed that all key installations in Abuja be paved on high alert from early morning of Saturday till after the sect leader’s anniversary celebrations.

“Operatives have been unusually busy monitoring some of the key areas in recent days. All I can tell you is that there is consciousness in government circles about the plots from certain quarters but the plots are being nipped in the bud,” one source said, adding that since the discovery of plans by certain people to unleash violence, there have been intense intelligence gathering.

Judge backs Jennifer Lopez over home video row with ex-husband.

0
A US appeal court sided with superstar Jennifer Lopez in a privacy dispute with her ex-husband over the use of the former couple's home videos.

The singer and actress, who annnounced last week that she was splitting from actor husband Marc Anthony, is seeking $10 million from her ex, Ojani Noa, and writer Ed Meyer.

Lopez says the video footage, which is not of a sexual nature, contains private information about her and her relationship with Noa, whom she married in 1997 but divorced 11 months later.

The 42-year-old, who originally sued Noa and Meyer in November 2009, alleges that the pair plan to make a movie she says is to be called "How I Married Jennifer Lopez: The J. Lo and Ojani Noa Story."

Noa and Meyer deny they are planning a tell-all movie and say it would not have the title stated in the lawsuit.

On Friday, a three-justice panel of the 2nd District Court of Appeal, reversing a lower court's ruling, said Lopez can force Noa and Meyer to resolve the case by arbitration.

The lawsuit was the second Lopez filed against Noa after their divorce: in 2007 she won $545,000 and legal costs for breach of contract over a planned ghostwritten tell-all book.

The book, which was blocked from being published, reportedly recounted how Lopez had had multiple affairs, including with her current husband Marc Anthony whom she is now leaving after seven years of marriage.

Police Reluctantly Found Woman Months After Death!

0
Did she resurrect? Was the first question on my mind, but then strange things do happen.
Sources say the woman has been dead since May and is believed to have died of natural causes.  However, someone discovered her and her deceased dog after gaining entry into the home around 1:15 pm Friday and Investigations are on-going.

"We've been telling the cops for months that we haven't seen her.  She has a dog.  Someone needed to do something and they never did," said Don Migliore, a neighbor.

Neighbors and the postman first reported her death in May, but police say there was a discrepancy in the officers' reports and the body was never found or removed.  An internal investigation is now underway to figure out what went wrong.

"I definitely think there needs to be some explaining.  A lot of explaining, in fact for the lack of followup on the smell and what happened to the woman," said Victoria Hall, of Hartford.

Sources say the woman's home was broken into this week and her car was stolen.  They have not recovered the car.

Police have not released the woman's identity.

How Okada-Man Discovered 6 Unconscious ACN Politicians!

0
Six politicians were rescued from a mini-van after motorcyclists found they were lying unconscious in the back of the car.

The politicians identified as members of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), were revived at a hospital after the bikers forced the driver of the vehicle to stop at the police station in Gbagada area of Lagos.
The group was returning from a party meeting in Ogun state. The police at Ifako Police Station in Gbagada, Lagos, arrested a suspect in connection with the alleged kidnap.
The victims, who were said to have been drugged before they were abducted, were said to be ward chairmen of Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in Bariga Local Council Development Area of Lagos State.
Police sources said the victims were returning from Ibafo in Ogun State, where they were billed to hold a meeting with the chairman of Bariga LCDA, Mr. Akeem Omoyele Sulaimon.
But the chairman, it was gathered, told them on telephone, that the meeting was no longer holding as he was attending another crucial one with the party's leaders.
The eight kidnapped politicians were in a Nissan Quest van, marked LT 286 AAA. They were found unconscious when their suspected kidnapper was arrested.
Luck ran out on the suspected kidnapper when the vehicle knocked down a commercial motorcyclist at Gbagada roundabout and sped off without waiting to know what happened to the bike rider.
As he sped off, he was pursued by a commuter bus driver who later blocked the suspected kidnapper's vehicle.
Passersby soon noticed that seven occupants of the vehicle were unconscious while only one, later identified as Elder Emmanuel Otekaye was conscious.
The police were informed and they promptly came and arrested the suspect and took him and the victims to their station at Ifako-Gbagada, where Otekaye told them they were coming from Ibafo after a botched meeting and all of them were ACN ward chairmen in Bariga.
He could not, however, explain further what happened before they ended up in the van.

Man Shot Himself To Win Sympathy From His Ex-Girlfriend!

0
What a looser! This is the height of stupidity...why can't he just walk away?
This is the story of a lover boy that goes by the name: 'Jordan Cardella' wanted to win back his girlfriend. So, to gain her sympathy, he hatched a plan *some call it foolishness* to have a friend shoot him in the back

Surprise, surprise ... his plan backfired.

In what Wisconsin prosecutors called "the most phenomenally stupid" case they had ever seen, two Wisconsin men pleaded guilty to felony weapons charges, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

According to the complaint, last January Cardella asked his friend Anthony Woodall to "shoot him in the back three times," but Woodall refused. Instead, he referred Cardella to Michael Wezykl, who agreed to carry out the bizarre hit in exchange for money or pills.

Cardella would have shot himself, but being a convicted felon, he didn't want to touch a gun, according to CBS.

After retrieving the firearm from Wezyk's home, the trio made their way to a nearby park. The complaint says that, "Wezyk then shot Cardella in the arm, and Cardella immediately slumped over. He asked to be shot again, but Wezyk stated, 'I'm done.'"

So Cardella never did receive the three wounds he thought would be necessary to find pity from his former girlfriend.

"Sorry to bring something so stupid into your courtroom," Wezyk later told Circuit Judge Rebecca Dallet, according to the Journal Sentinel.

Wezyk, 24, and Woodall, 20, must each serve two years probation and 100 hours of community service.

The good news for Cardella is that the charges against him were dropped, so he'll only have to live with a shameful scar story.* Lol*

The bad news? His ex never visited him.*I just can't stop laughing---Lol*

Rev Father Flogged Over Burial Rites!

0
What? Did I say flogged? A Reverend Father? Unbelievable!
Well... nine persons from Umudioka village in Awka, Anambra State were yesterday arraigned before an Awka chief magistrate court on a 10 –count charge of flogging and beating up the administrator of St. Patrick's Catholic Cathedral, Awka, Reverend Father Patrick Chukwuma and a community leader, Major Christopher Nwole (rtd), among others, following a disagreement over the dust to dust ritual during the burial ceremony of one Raphael Nwako who died early this year.

The Church and some people in the community have been having a face – off over the age –long ritual of widows putting sand in the grave of the their late husbands during burials and the disagreement climaxed in March this year when the villagers allegedly prevented the Reverend Father who was presiding at a burial ceremony from allowing the widow of the late Nwole to perform the ritual for her late husband.

Among the charges were that the accused persons assaulted, flogged and snatched the shovel from the Reverend Father when he tried to hand the shovel over to the wife of the deceased to perform the dust to dust ceremony and allegedly used canes on him and other people, including the retired Army Major who supported the position of the Church on the matter.

All the roads leading to Ekiti State are not good enough and the state government cannot afford to embark on dualisation of any of them now. Why should a state that prides itself as the Fountain of Knowledge in Nigeria be one of the poorest?

Good News: LUTH Performs First Kidney Transplant!

2
Prof. Christian Chukwu, Health Minister

Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) Idi-Araba, has recorded a feat in renal transplantation treatment by successfully performing its first kidney transplant on a 38 year old female last Tuesday. The patient is said to be in a stable condition.

Medical experts have not been able to advance reasons for why there is an escalating incidence of end stage renal failure requiring kidney transplantation, but the general experience among the health care providers is that, there is an increasing rate of patients presenting in hospitals ailments relating to kidney diseases".

With this addition to the number of hospitals capable of performing this surgery, it is hoped that Nigerian patients with End-stage Renal Disease requiring renal transplantation will have improved access to services in an environment that is culturally acceptable and at a price that is more affordable to them.

To perform the feat, it was a collaborative effort between LUTH surgeons and their counterparts from Egypt, stressing that LUTH had earlier sent a team of professionals to Egypt for training and as the hospital was performing the first transplantation, it was expedient that the trainers monitor the procedure to avoid mistakes.

The first recipient, government through the hospital's management bore the cost of the surgery, but subsequent transplantation at LUTH will not cost more than N2million naira.

Forex Dealers Cry Out Over Fake Dollars!

0
Air travellers and other airport users have been alerted about the circulation of fake United States dollars at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.

Bureau de Change operators at the  airport have cried out against the circulation of the currency and millions of dollars exchange for the Naira every day at the airport.
Reacting to the arrest of two ladies caught with over 2000 fake dollars at the Hajj camp of the Bureau de change office, the Chairman of Hajj Camp Forex Exchange Market, Arewa Complex, Mr. Abubakar Usman said the trend had become a source of worry to them.
According to Usman, the two ladies in their late 20s were apprehended while trying to exchange fake dollars for Naira.
Usman noted that members of the association have lost millions of naira to fraudsters as a result of fake foreign currencies . He warned that anyone caught will be handed over to the law enforcement agents for prosecution.
He said the ugly trend had adversely affected their goodwill and reduced the trust their customers have for them. He added that every month, about 12 suspects  were  apprehended for similar offences.
Usman recalled with sorrow how some of their members were killed by fraudsters after inviting them to hotels to exchange money and vowed that none of their members will do any transaction in hotels, eateries and other public places anymore.
He lamented that some military personnel were in the habit of defending some of these fraudsters when they were arrested, noting that it took the intervention of Operation MESA  to get one of the suspects arrested and taken to the police station.
He said henceforth any officer caught encouraging the release of suspect would be reported to the appropriate authorities for discipline.
Usman warned that the incident of fake foreign currencies has dented the image of the country as it also affected foreigners.
When contacted, the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the Hajj camp police station was not readily available for comment but a senior police officer confirmed the arrest of the two suspects.

JAMB Sets 180 Points For Varsities, 160 For Polytechnics!

0
The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced 180 as the official cut-off point for universities and 160 for Polytechnics and Colleges of Education.

JAMB Registrar Prof. 'Dibu Ojerinde said this while speaking to the press at the second combined policy committee meeting on admissions to degree-awarding institutions, National Diploma, Nigerian Certificate in Education and National Innovational Diploma awarding institutions yesterday in Abuja.

He said the reason for the differentiation was because it was observed that candidates prefer to go to the universities instead of the non-universities thereby delaying the admission process of the universities.

Responding to likely assumptions of the public that the board is lowering the education standard, he said "it's not true, what we are saying is that the entry qualification in terms of senior secondary certificate examination must be the same. Even the 180, some of them may not take people who have 250 depending on the courses registered for."

Ojerinde said any university that over stretches its carrying capacity will be delisted from the internet for registration and vowed to punish universities that went ahead to declare their cut off point earlier.

On her part, the Minister of Education, Prof. Ruquayyatu Rufai said the establishment of nine extra federal universities and four private universities was aimed at creating access to tertiary education in the country.

On his part, chairman of the governing board, Prof. Sam Ukpabi called on the institutions to follow the guidelines recommended by the board for the admissions process

About seven persons including little children were Thursday feared dead, while over 50 buildings housing police officers as well as officers of the Nigeria Prisons Service, Enugu State were razed when a tanker carrying fuel caught fire and exploded at a roundabout near the popular Ogbete Market, Enugu.

Several police officers and prison wardens were rendered homeless, while property worth several millions of naira including over 10 cars, innumerable motorcycles, most of them belonging to either traders at the market or officers at the Central Police Station and the Nigeria Prisons were completely destroyed.

But for the timely intervention of men of the Enugu Fire Service as well as officers and men of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC), Nigeria Securities and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), among other security operatives, the entire Central Police Station and the Ogbete main market would have been completely razed down.

Though, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in the state, Steven Ekpei said only three persons died in the inferno, eye witness account had it that the deaths were not less than seven. Even some fire-fighters sustained varying degrees of injuries while trying to put off the rampaging fire. They were rushed to Parklane hospital.

According to the eyewitness account, the driver of the Petroleum Tanker belonging to Shorelink Oil and Gas Services Port-Harcourt with registration number XL 968 JJJ may have battled effortlessly to control the heavy vehicle at the round before it fell down before exploding at about 7.07 am and caught fire shortly after.

It was also gathered that the leaked fuel from the tanker flowed into the Enugu Central Police Station Barracks and some parts of Ogbete Main Market through a gutter located at Prison barracks.

Biotech Can Create ‘Human Spare Parts’...Says Experts!

0
A Professor of Biotechnology,  James Ogbonna has said "the future of man on earth depends to a great extent on Biotechnology because it potentially has solutions to all our problems,'' including creating "human spare parts''. Ogbonna spoke while delivering the 61 annual lecture of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, UNN, yesterday.

He also said Biotechnology has been helping to ensure increase in crop and farm animal productivity as it has the potential of causing the production of enough food to feed the world.
He said although the ''use of human embryonic stem cell is controversial but adult stem cells are now isolated from the brain, intestine, hair, skin, pancreas, bone marrow, fat, teeth, muscle and blood,'' pointing out that ''these adult stem cells are used to produce vital organs and less controversial.
His words: ''Can we now imagine a world with sufficient quality food for all, where there is no energy scarcity;  with very clean and safe environment and ready cure for all diseases threatening human existence now?
''A world where human beings can decide to design and "produce" the type of human he needs on earth? A world where man will be living for 150 years or even longer?
''Biotechnology is saying that it is possible and has demonstrated some of these.
"It is now possible to produce crops that are resistant to various diseases and pests; that can mature much faster and produce higher yields even on poor soils; crops that are more nutritious with much longer shelf-life, bio-fortified food crops, diet food stuff for diabetic patients and people that require special diets, edible vaccines from plant sources; farm animals that grow faster, produce better quality meat, cow and other animals that produce large quantities of good quality milk, birds that lay more than two eggs every day, sheep that produce more and better quality wool.
''The application of Biotechnology has already led to several-folds yield increases in many plant species.
''Some of these crops/plant products have been commercialized, others are being tested in experimental farms while others are at various stages of development. It has been applied to crops like potato, rose, cotton, corn, tomato, rape seed, rice, wheat, barley, yam and tobacco".

Former Yankees Pitcher Hideki Irabu Found Dead At His California Home!

0
Former Yankees pitcher Hideki Irabu was found dead at his California home yesterday.  The initial reports came from the Japanese paper, Asahi Shimbum, and his death has since been confirmed by the New York Yankees. Suicide by hanging is suspected.

Irabu has had a troubled post-baseball career. He was arrested in Gardena, California last year for drunk driving.  Back in 2008 he was arrested for assaulting a bar manager in Japan after allegedly consuming 20 glasses of beer.

After achieving stardom in Japan, Irabu's contract was purchased by the San Diego Padres in early 1997.  Irabu wanted no part of San Diego, however, and a trade to the Yankees was arranged.  Irabu earned World Series rings with the Yankees in both 1998 and 1999, but he fell far short of expectations and drew the ire of George Steinbrenner who famously dubbed him the "fat toad."  The Yankees shipped him off to Montreal for Jake Westrbook following the 1999 season. He lasted two seasons with the Expos and one season with the Rangers before retiring after the 2002 season.  Matthew Pouliot has a more thorough analysis of Irabu's career here.

We'll update with more information when it becomes available.  For now, however, it appears to be a sad end to a troubled life

Students Found Cameras Hidden in Their Apartment!

0
Two female Bulgarian students visiting the United States for the summer found hidden cameras hidden in their Florida apartment this week and fear they may have been videotaped throughout their three-month stay.

Ratitsa Dzhambazova, 23, and Vanya Amokovareva, 22, discovered at least four cameras stashed throughout the apartment they were sub-leasing for the summer in both bedrooms, the bathroom and the living room area, according to police.
"This is unbelievable, but one night I had a dream that someone watch me when I was naked," said Dzhambazova.
The women's worst nightmare came true when a male roommate pulled one of the smoke detector-like devices off the wall that discovered a camera hidden inside. They later discovered more cameras stationed around the apartment.
Four other roommates moved out of the apartment after the cameras were found, according to Dzhambazova, a journalism student.
Det. Larry McKinnon of the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Department said that in addition to the hidden cameras, a closet sealed with a padlock was discovered and, after it was open, detectives found a closed circuit TV box and a wireless router.

Police are still investigating whether or not the cameras were active and if they were connected to an outside location and being broadcast.

"You know in the beginning, I am in a strange place and I see these wires and I was thinking… do you think this is a camera? I was joking. I never think this is really a camera," said Dzhambazova.

Dzhambazova and Amokovareva paid $4,000 to an agency that allowed to come to the United States for the summer to work and improve their English.
The women are subleasing the apartment from Raj Armani, a Tampa businessman, and worked as models for a business venture Armani recently created called "Pizza Babe." Its website touts the company as a pizza place that sends out attractive women to make deliveries.

Dzhambazova said they were never paid for their work.
Police have not named Armani as a suspect, but Dzhambazova said she fears he could have been involved. Calls to Armani were not immediately returned.
Police say that they are also investigating the possibility that the cameras existed before the girls moved in three months ago. McKinnon said the person responsible for installing the cameras could face misdemeanor charges or, if audio was captured, a third degree felony.
"It's bizarre… It's just crazy," said McKinnon. "It's just a huge invasion of privacy."

Couple Goes To Church Where They Married 40 Years Ago To Commit Suicide!

1
A Las Vegas couple traveled from their home in Nevada to the Florida church where they were married 40 years ago to kill themselves in an apparent suicide pact, police said.

A pastor found Bruce Wright and his wife, Patricia Wright, Sunday morning beneath an oak tree behind Friendship United Methodist Church in Punta Gorda, about 80 miles south of Tampa. Two guns were nearby.
"He used a shotgun to his head and she used the rifle," said Bob Carpenter, a spokesman for the Charlotte County, Fla., sheriff's office. "It was in the head, too. It was a pact."
The husband, 60, was found dead, and his wife, 57, died Wednesday after several days on life support at an area hospital, Carpenter said.
The couple's nephew, Daniel Johnson, told the Las Vegas Review-Journal that the Wrights had no children and rarely kept contact with family members. Johnson said the family doesn't understand why the couple killed themselves or returned to the church where they had wed.
"It was a romantic tragedy," said Johnson, 28. "Life started for the two of them there, and that's officially where life ended for them."
The couple had been staying in a local motel together, but it was unclear when they arrived in Florida, Carpenter told The Associated Press. The couple had attended high school in Charlotte County and still had family in the area, he said.
On Sunday, they apparently parked their SUV with a Nevada veteran license plate in the church parking lot and walked to the tree in the backyard, Carpenter said.
The Rev. Mike Winchell, who moved from Oklahoma to join the church two weeks ago, found the bodies when he arrived to turn on the air conditioning before Sunday service, Carpenter said. Winchell did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
"The sheriff was trying to console the pastor that this is not really our community," Carpenter said. "It's a heck of thing to step into."
Patricia Wright was most recently employed at a hospital and Bruce Wright was working in sound production, Johnson said.
Johnson said he last saw them two years ago, when the couple spoke of leaving Las Vegas and moving to California. Johnson did not believe they ever made it there.
"We want to figure out what's going on and put people at ease," Johnson said. "But honestly, all we have is a few facts, and everything else is speculation."

Why Ladies Can't Wear Trousers In Plateau Government Offices!

1
The Plateau State Government has said the barring of females from wearing trousers at the state secretariat and other government offices was part of the campaign against indecent dressing.

Head of Service in the state, Mr. Moses Gwom who gave the clarification in an interview with newsmen said it was also in line with the 10-point agenda of Governor Jonah Jang's administration of which ethical re-orientation was one.

He said indecent dressing by females should not be condoned in offices where government business were conducted hence those considered not to be properly dressed were turned back from the secretariat.

The policy which started over a year ago has seen many women sent back from the gate of the Joseph Gomwalk Secretariat and other government offices for wearing trousers or other dresses considered indecent.

A woman who was once turned back from the secretariat described the experience as "embarrassing" arguing that she did not consider wearing of trousers as indecent.

She that rather than a blanket ban on the wearing of trousers by women, what was considered indecent should be well defined so as not to embarrass people unnecessarily.

She said:  "On the day in question, I was wearing a trouser suit which is an acceptable mode of formal dressing anywhere in the world, but I was turned back and could not transact the business for which I went there".

65-Year Old Woman To Face Trial For Hanging Fake Testicles On Pickup Truck!

0
Virginia Tice, 65, was arrested in early July at a local convenience store after a police officer spotted the adornment dangling from her truck.

South Carolina law considers a bumper sticker, decal or device indecent when it describes, in an offensive way as determined by contemporary community standards, "sexual acts, excretory functions, or parts of the human body."

The offense carries a maximum fine of $445 but no jail time, Fuda said.

"This is certainly not a staple of my ticket writing in Bonneau," the police chief told Reuters on Wednesday.

The Charleston law firm Savage & Savage will represent Tice for free, attorney Scott Bischoff said. The trial had been scheduled for next week but was delayed because the defendant will be out of town.

"She's such a sweet lady and she just says 'I don't want to pay the fine.' We'll let a jury decide whether this is really criminal behavior. I don't want to take away from the importance of free speech, but it's really comical," he said.

Lawmakers in some states have sought to ban the colorful plastic or rubber devices that go by brand names such as Bulls Balls and Truck Nutz.

Fuda said if the fake testicles were a free speech issue, "I don't know what they would be trying to express."

"I went to (a) few websites that said, excuse the expression, 'show your nuts,'" he said. "I didn't see anywhere it said support your local proctologist or farmer."

Reps Order Repatriation Of Nigerian Penciled For Cremation In Germany!

Christy Schnudeck was allegedly murdered following a dispute at a shop where she had gone to make claims.
The House of Representatives has mandated the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to intervene in a case of a murdered Nigerian purportedly slated for cremation by German authorities.

Thirty-nine-year old Christy Schnudeck (also known as Omorodion) was married to a German and both were living together until her death.

She reportedly died following a dispute at shop where she had gone to make certain claims, according to a motion tabled by the House Deputy Majority Leader, Leo Ogor.

Ogor said information available indicated that the deceased was murdered and the authorities in Germany are already planning to burn the corpse, against the Nigerian culture of burying the dead.

"This parliament should intervene by facilitating the immediate repatriation of the deceased remains to Nigeria for a befitting burial according to the tradition of her people," he said.

Details of the case are still unclear, but the House ordered an investigation into the death, directing its clerk to liaise with the foreign affairs ministry to retrieve the body and find out the circumstances of death.

Murderer Caught After 32 Years on The Run!

0
This combo made from photos provided by the Florida Department of Corrections and the U.S. Marshal's Service shows Frederick Barrett in 1979, left, and on Wednesday, July 27, 2011. Barrett, who escaped from a Florida prison in 1979 while serving a life sentence for murder, was arrested Wednesday outside the town of Montrose, Colo.

Officers posing as forest rangers surprised a 60-year-old escapee from Florida at a remote Colorado cabin on Wednesday, bringing a sudden end to his 32 years on the lam after a murder conviction in the 1970s.
Frederick Barrett was arrested outside a makeshift but tidy cabin near Montrose, about 200 miles southwest of Denver, when the officers said they wanted to discuss fire danger, the U.S. Marshals Service said. When they saw a tattoo on his hand that matched one that Barrett was known to have, they told him he was under arrest.
"His whole face, every expression dropped out of his face," said Charlie Ahmad of the Marshals Service, recounting what the arresting officers told him.
Ahmad, the enforcement supervisor for the Marshals Service in Colorado, led the arrest team of marshals, Montrose County deputies and U.S. Forest Service law enforcement officers. Ahmad and some of the team surreptitiously surrounded the cabin before other officers collared Barrett.
Barrett was convicted of murder in the 1971 death of Carl Ardolino in Florida, according to the Florida Department of Corrections.
Ardolino had picked up Barrett and another man who were hitchhiking, said Ron Lindbak, a deputy U.S. marshal in Florida. Ardolino was choked and beaten until he was unconscious and then held underwater in a ditch until he died.
Barrett escaped from Union Correctional Institution in Raiford, Fla., in August 1979 by climbing three fences at night during a power failure. Barrett had escaped and been captured twice before that, Lindbak said.
The Montrose Daily Press reported Barrett had lived in Montrose County since 1994.
The arrest took months of planning, but authorities didn't say how they tracked Barrett to Colorado. Barrett had been using the alias "Neil Meltzer," Florida authorities said. Barrett wouldn't say how he had supported himself, Ahmad said.
Barrett's cabin was two stories and was connected to a camper, Ahmad said, with plywood floors, a wood-burning stove and a generator.
"It was kept very clean, it was meticulously clean," Ahmad said.
Barrett was alone when arrested but there was evidence of a second person "coming and going," Ahmad said.
Authorities aren't looking for anyone else, he said.
"We rarely prosecute those (aiding and abetting cases), and when we do, we rarely win," he said.
The cabin was on a dirt road about an hour's drive west of Montrose, a town of about 18,000. In the wintertime, it's accessible only by snowshoe or snowmobile.
The cabin is on private land bordered by the Uncompahgre National Forest, and a campsite near the lot is popular with hunters, Ahmad said. He said he didn't know who owned the land.
Barrett is being held at the Montrose County jail awaiting extradition to Florida.
Officers saw several firearms and what appeared to be a small marijuana growing operation, and local authorities were seeking a state search warrant for the property, the Marshals Service said.

Cultists rape two students, place nude pictures on Facebook!

What can be more evil than this?
Two ladies suspected to be students of the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Ijagun, Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State were allegedly raped by some members of a secret cult and their nude pictures posted on the social-network site, Facebook.

The development led to a violent attack among warring cult groups in the town leaving at least two students of the university dead, and paralyzing commercial activities in Ijebu-Ode and its environs.
The female students, who were alleged to be members of the cult group, Red Rose, were said to have been abducted and taken into a nearby bush where they were raped.

Enugu Tanker Fire: Six Burnt To Death, 20 Houses Destroyed!

0
Burnt houses during the early morning fire in Enugu

SIX lives, about 20 houses, household property and goods worth millions of naira were lost in the fire outbreak that occurred following a fuel tanker accident in Enugu Thursday morning.

The loud explosion from the tanker fire caused panic among residents of the area including those in Udi Siding and inmates of the Enugu Prisons who feared that it could be a bomb.
Sources said some inmates on Awaiting Trial were said to have ran to different directions in the prison yard thinking that the wall had collapsed but they were disappointed when they discovered that the loud noise and the ensuing inferno came from outside the prison.
In a swift reaction to the fire outbreak, Governor Sullivan Chime, yesterday, ordered that all illegal structures in the state capital be pulled down and removed within two weeks just as he commiserated with the victims.
The tanker with registration number Lagos KT 968 JJJ belonging to Shorelink Oil and Gas Services Limited, Port-Harcourt, Rivers State fell while negotiating the Central Police Station, CPS roundabout in front of the Nigeria Prisons, Enugu at about 7. 05am.
Soon after it fell, the 33,000 litres of petrol which it conveyed was discharged through a gutter that ran from the Nigeria Prisons through the police barracks and part of Ogbete Main Market consuming several household items, vehicles, wares and livestock.  The disaster has, however, rendered several families homeless.
Among the property completely razed by the inferno were six block of houses in the Prisons barrack, five houses in CPS barrack, seven vehicles including the fuel tanker, two motorcycles, five goats, about 20 shops containing different types of goods along the Railway Line in Ogbete market, furniture and other household appliances belonging to warders and policemen living in the affected barracks.
An eyewitness, Mr. Ndubuisi Ota from Abia State who clamed to have raised the alarm that saved many of the residents, narrated the incident to Vanguard at the scene while the rescue operation was still in progress yesterday.
"The tanker driver was coming from New Market area when on getting to the CPS/Prison roundabout I saw him struggling with the steering in an attempt to negotiate the roundabout to continue his journey towards the Old Park, but in the process he climbed a stone and fell flat on the ground.
"Immediately it fell, the fuel in the tanker started spilling into the barrack.  Sensing danger, I rushed into the barrack shouting – this is fuel; this is fire, to see if I could save many souls. So many people started running out of their rooms but suddenly the fuel caught fire with a loud noise like bomb.
"I was in the middle of the fire; it was only God that saved me as I escaped unhurt.  I saw the driver jumping out of fallen tanker as the inferno spread towards the market area and the CPS barrack. The fire fighters came about an hour after the fire began. They tried to put out the fire but several property were destroyed. It was a terrible incident.  I saw some corpses on the ground but I can't say how many people died. So many people that sustained injuries were also rushed to the hospital," ota said.
Officials of the Enugu State Fire Service, Federal Road Safety Commission, the Police and the Nigeria Civil Defence Corps, however, succeeded in putting out the fire within the Prison barrack where their equipment could reach, but before then it had caused serious havoc.
Chime orders removal of illegal structures
Deputy Governor of Enugu State, Mr. Sunday Onyebuchi who visited the scene of the fire incident yesterday, said that Governor Chime had ordered that all illegal structures in the state capital be pulled down and removed within two weeks to enable the fire fighters have easy passage in the event of such incident.
The directive followed disturbing reports that personnel of the state Fire Service who had arrived the scene after they were alerted encountered difficulties in their efforts to prevent the spread of the fire owing to illegal structures that blocked the access routes.
Speaking to reporters shortly after inspecting the incident, Mr. Sunday Onyebuchi said the government would do everything possible to minimize the damage from such tragedies in future and said destruction of illegal that hindered the movement of fire trucks was a major step in that direction.
He commiserated with the victims of the explosion and assured them that government would look into the matter and come to their aid.  He also stressed that the state government would find ways to alleviate the suffering of the people.
He also commended the fire service and other paramilitary agencies in the state for their quick response to the incident while warning drivers of heavy duty vehicles in the state to apply more caution more especially when they are conveying highly inflammable goods.
The chairman Enugu North Local Government Area, Mr. Herbert Orji in his reaction described the occurrence as tragic and noted that properties worth millions were destroyed.

Man Robs Cupcake Store With Syringeful of HIV-Positive Blood!

1
It's hard to really put one's finger on the precise moment a trend dies or comes alive . Or perhaps, when someone robs a cupcake store in Denver by waving around a syringe filled with HIV-positive blood?

The incident in question happened last Thursday morning at Gigi's Cupcakes in Denver. A man entered the store, grabbed a worker by the arm and quickly "forced her into a corner," said her co-worker.

"He showed her the syringe. It was uncapped and (he said) it was full of his own AIDS blood. He said he was going to inject her if she didn't open the register."

The man eventually made off with $300. No one was hurt — except for the cupcake, which is now well and truly dead as a doornail. (P.S. Avoid the red velvets. They have a funny aftertaste.)
First, somebody at Gawker continues to demonstrate MAD stock photo searching skills.

Second, the problem with removing your own blood to use it as a weapon is it significantly reduces the amount of crimes you can commit per day.

He was also fined N10,000 by Chief Magistrate Yohannah Gwadah.

The convicted ex-policeman was sued for swindling unsuspecting members of the public of various sums of money under the pretext of helping them to register their products with NAFDAC.

Three count charges of criminal trespass, impersonation and cheating were preferred against the accused. He pleaded guilty and appealed to the court for leniency.

Delivering judgement, Chief Magistrate Gwadah said that because the accused was a first time offender, he would only sentence him on the count of criminal trespass and should therefore pay a fine of N5,000 or serve a six-month imprisonment.

On the count of impersonation, the magistrate sentenced the accused to pay a fine of N5,000 or serve a term of eight months' imprisonment, while the convict was ordered to pay a fine of N10,000 and serve a term of three months imprisonment on the count of cheating. The sentences are to run concurrently.

A statement by the NAFDAC North West Zone Public Relations Officer, Jessica Okwuchi, said luck ran out on the fake NAFDAC officer when one of his victims, Mr. Samuel Pariso, whom he had earlier collected N11,000 from, became suspicious when he demanded more money using threats.

"Mr. Pariso narrated his ordeal to his friend, Mr. Samsudeen Hassan who lured Ibrahim to Kongo Conference Centre pretending he wanted assistance for registration of his water. He was apprehended and handed over to the police when he could not produce any identification as a staff of NAFDAC," the statement said.
