Michael Jackson's Bodyguard Says Dr Murray Had Him Hide Vials Before Calling 911

0

The first bodyguard to reach Michael Jackson's bedroom after the singer's doctor called for help told jurors Thursday that he was told by Dr. Conrad Murray to hide medicine vials before calling 911.

Alberto Alvarez said in testimony Thursday that Dr. Conrad Murray grabbed the vials form a nightstand next to Jackson, who was still in his bed.

He testified that Murray only told him Jackson had a bad reaction.

When he entered the bedroom, Alvarez said he saw Jackson's eyes were open and was surprised to see that the singer was wearing a condom catheter.

Alvarez testified he stowed the vials before calling 911. He is the sixth witness to testify in Murray's involuntary manslaughter trial, which is in its third day.

Alvarez also testified Thursday that Michael Jackson was in good spirits at a rehearsal on the night before he died.

"He was very happy," Alberto Alvarez testified. "I do recall he was in very good spirits."

Murray has pleaded not guilty to involuntary manslaughter in connection with Jackson's death.

Prosecutors have been calling witnesses who were with Jackson and Murray the day the singer died.

Authorities accuse Murray of giving Jackson a lethal dose of the anesthetic propofol in the bedroom.

Prosecutors are calling key witnesses in an attempt to show jurors that Murray delayed calling authorities on the day the King of Pop was found lifeless and was intent on concealing indications that he had been giving the singer doses of the surgical anesthetic.

The jury has already gotten a glimpse into the entertainer's inner sanctum through photos and testimony.

In testimony during a preliminary hearing earlier this year, Alvarez said Murray ordered him to stash away vials of medicine and an IV bag before calling 911. Jackson, his eyes and mouth open, appeared to be dead, he said.

Alvarez's testimony will likely be challenged by Murray's defense attorneys, who on Wednesday questioned Jackson's head of security and the singer's personal assistant about why they didn't reveal certain details about the day Jackson died to police for at least two months.

Defense lawyer Ed Chernoff asked Faheem Muhammad and Michael Amir Williams about whether they conferred with Alvarez before their interviews with detectives.

Williams, who was Jackson's personal assistant, said his interview with detectives had been delayed. He testified Wednesday that he received an urgent phone call from Murray on the day of Jackson's death but wasn't told to call 911.

He called Muhammad, who then dispatched Alvarez to Jackson's bedroom on the second floor of the singer's rented mansion in the ritzy Holmby Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles.

The room was off-limits to Jackson's staff, and Muhammad paused before racing up the stairs after reaching the mansion just before paramedics arrived.

He described a heart-wrenching scene. By then, he said, Jackson had been removed from his bed and was on the floor, where Murray, sweaty and frantic, was performing CPR.

Alvarez was pacing nervously, Muhammad told the jury. When he saw Jackson up close, he understood why.

"What did you observe about his face," prosecutor David Walgren asked

"That his eyes were open," Muhammad said. "That his mouth was slightly open."

"Did he appear to be dead," Walgren asked.

"Yes."

The bodyguard soon noticed that Jackson's children, Prince and Paris, had gathered by the doorway.

"Paris was on the ground, balled up crying," Muhammad said. He ushered the children out of the room, and then into a sport utility vehicle so they could follow the ambulance to the hospital.

Some of the scenes recounted by Muhammad will likely be repeated Thursday as prosecutors work to fill in other details about Murray's behavior after finding Jackson unconscious. Also expected to testify on Thursday are Kai Chase, a chef who spoke to Murray briefly on the morning of Jackson's death, and paramedics who also tried to revive the singer. The medics believed Jackson was already dead by the time they arrived, but Murray insisted the performer be taken to a hospital for additional resuscitation efforts.

Prosecutors contend Murray did not tell any of the bodyguards or emergency personnel that he had been giving Jackson propofol and other sedatives to help him sleep.

Chernoff claimed in opening statements that Jackson gave himself the lethal dose.

Much of the trial in later sessions will focus on the science of what killed Jackson, and dueling theories of Murray's role.

The first bodyguard to reach Michael Jackson's bedroom after the singer's doctor called for help told jurors Thursday that he was told by Dr. Conrad Murray to hide medicine vials before calling 911.

Mandela's Family Reality Show To Premier In South Africa

2

South Africans will glimpse into the lives of Nelson Mandela's family when a reality show featuring three of his grandchildren premiers in 2012, the producers said Thursday.

"The show provides a first look into a high-profile South African family," the producers said in a statement.

The stars of the show, Zaziwe Dlamini-Manaway, 34, Swati Dlamini, 32 and Dorothy Adjoa Amuah, 27, promise to "showcase contemporary independent women in South Africa", it said.

"Their aim is to showcase the new Africa and give viewers a peek into its level of sophistication and its exciting potential," said the statement.

It will trace the daily lives of the American-schooled women who lead glitzy lives among Johannesburg's rich and famous, it said.

"These girls may have grown up abroad but they have all chosen to come back home to South Africa and bring the best that they have gathered in their international experiences and studies," it said.

"They feel that they can make a positive contribution to the continent," said the statement.

Mandela's daughter Zenani, born with his second wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, is the mother of the two Dlamini women.

Amuah is the step-daughter of Makaziwe Mandela, one of Mandela's children with his first wife Evelyn.

The producers did not say what the rest of Mandela's family thinks of the show, but said "they believe they have fought for the right for their children to choose their own destiny and their own path".

The show would be the latest commercial initiative connected to Mandela. Two months ago, a local clothing company launched a fashion line to raise money for Mandela's AIDS charity.

The clothes were last week paraded at a Fashion Week.

It is not clear whether the ailing Nelson Mandela, now 93 and living in his village home, will feature in the show.

7 Grandmothers Awarded Taekwondo Black Belts!

0

Too old to learn Taekwondo? Not for a group of Hong Kong grandmothers who became black belts after demonstrating their kicking and punching prowess, according to a report Wednesday.

The seven women, aged 63 to 74, received the top ranking in the Korean martial art after passing a test at the southern Chinese city's first taekwondo class for the elderly, the South China Morning Post reported.

The main challenge, said the eldest woman in the group, was not physical but mental as they had to memorise all the moves. The test included standard kicks and four pre-set patterns of attack and defensive movements.

"Luckily, we have a very nice classmate who wrote down every pattern in detail," Lam Sai-mui, 74, told the Post, saying the written notes made it easier for her to practise the punching and kicking every day.

"I was very lazy, and afraid that I couldn't learn something new," said Lam, who said she had a sore foot problem for a long time but the pain was gone after she took up the taekwondo class last year.

Taekwondo has different-coloured belts to indicate skill levels, ranging from white for beginners to black for masters.

'Christian Pastor' Faces Execution In Iran, But Will Be Spared If He Converts Back To Islam!

0

As we wait for the formal written verdict to come through, Pastor Nadarkhani's life hangs in the balance. Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW) calls for continued urgent international action to prevent his execution, which could still happen anytime.

CSW's sources in Iran have firmly denied reports that a verbal annulment of the charges and death sentence had been given. We are urging everyone not to draw conclusions until a formal written verdict is received from the court within the next week. In the meantime we need to keep up pressure on the Iranian regime to prevent his execution.

Pastor Nadarkhani received a death sentence for apostasy (abandoning Islam). Pastor Nadarkhani is currently on trial in Rasht. He has appeared in court three times this week and was asked each day to renounce his faith to secure an annulment of the apostasy charge and a lifting of the death sentence.  He refused each time.

Over 21,000 people have already emailed the Iranian embassy in the UK – add your voice to theirs and support Pastor Nadarkhani.

Use the form below to email the Iranian embassy to urge them not to go ahead with the execution. If you're not based in the UK, please send an email or phone the Iranian embassy in your own country.

The facts:

- Pastor Nadarkhani is repeatedly being asked by the court in Rasht to renounce his faith in order to avoid execution and that the last chance he will be given to do so is tomorrow (Wednesday 28th September), after which he could be executed at any time.

- Pastor Nadarkhani has been charged, and faces execution, solely on the basis of his adopting Christian faith. As such, the Islamic Republic of Iran is violating its obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). Article 18 includes a provision for the right to "have or to adopt" a religion, which has been interpreted authoritatively by the UN Human Rights Committee as including the right to change one's religion.

- Iran's constitution sanctions Christianity as a legitimate minority faith and asserts that Christians are allowed to freely carry out their religious rites. Article 23 asserts that no one may be "reprimanded simply because of having a certain belief".

Requests:

- You should address your email to "Your Excellency, the Ambassador of Iran" and don't forget to thank him for passing on your appeal, as a sign of respect.

- Express concern over the latest developments in Pastor Yousef Nadarkhani's case.

- Express your hope that the Iranian judiciary will cease to pursue their current course of action against Pastor Nadarkhani and will acquit him of all charges, in accordance with Iranian and international law.

- Request that the Ambassador passes your appeal on to the Iranian Government as a matter of urgency.

As we wait for the formal written verdict to come through, Pastor Nadarkhani's life hangs in the balance.

US Court Convicts Nigerian Pastor For Cheating A Dying Cancer Patients!

0

A Nigerian-born doctor and ordained pastor, Rev. Christine Daniel, who has been convicted by a US court for peddling snake oil treatment to dying cancer patients, mail and wire fraud, tax evasion and witness tampering, faces up to 150 years imprisonment when her sentence is pronounced in December.

For years, the Nigerian pastor preached the love of Jesus.

Practiced medicine for the poor. And promised a sure-cure for terminal cancer patients.

But Rev. Christine Daniel, the founder of Sonrise Medical Clinic in Mission Hills, was a fraud. She was convicted by a federal jury this week of peddling snake oil treatments to dying patients across the nation.

"This is the most egregious fraud case I've seen," said Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph O. Johns, prosecutor in the case. "The defendant used her victims' religion to blind them to logic, to overcome their common sense. And to spend tens of thousands of dollars on a bogus cancer cure."

Daniel, 57, of Northridge, was found guilty on Monday in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles of 11 counts of mail and wire fraud, tax evasion and witness tampering.

Her sentence will be pronounced December 5 and she faces up to 150 years in prison and a fine of $5.5 million.

Her trial, which began in March, included the tear-filled testimony of dozens of relatives of terminal patients who had died while taking Daniel's product.

"In addition to giving them false hope and stealing their money, she also stole their time," said Johns, chief of the environmental crimes section.

She also failed to report $1.3 million on her corporate tax returns from 2002 to 2004.

Daniel is an ordained Pentecostal minister who got her medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia.

For decades she ran medical clinics for the poor, in the San Fernando Valley and downtown, and worked in hospital emergency rooms.

She was also devoted to regular missions overseas.

"If I can just help somebody - one person," she told the Daily News in 1995. "I just want to make an impact on one person's life. Just show them love. Just let them know you care."

A receptionist at her Sunrise clinic on Tuesday said she was too busy with patients to come to the phone. She did not return a request for comment.

Prosecutors said Daniel had used her status as a minister to create trust within the evangelical Christian community.

At her clinic and via the Trinity Broadcasting Network, Daniel promised cures for illnesses from Alzheimer's disease to terminal cancer.

Her secret: remedies like "C-Extract" created from herbs gathered around the world, then blended for each individual patient.

But a chemical analysis by prosecutors found such ingredients as beef extract flavoring and sunscreen preservative, none of which could cure disease.

The cost of such nostrums ranged from $4,270 a week to between $120,000 and $150,000 for a six-month treatment, prosecutors said.

"They were encouraged to fly to Mission Hills. Stay in a flea-ridden motel. And spend the last few months of their lives drinking a foul concoction ... that tasted like sewage water," Johns said.

Daniel and her employees induced 55 victims to send roughly $1 million to the Sonrise clinic, most of whom died within three to six months after the bogus cure.

One of them was 33-year-old Paula Middlebrooks, a married mother of two from Smiths, Ala.

Diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer, she contacted the Sunrise clinic after her dentist told her his wife had taken the cure - and would soon come home cancer free.

After visiting the clinic, Daniel told the devout Baptist that chemotherapy wouldn't help.

The doctor said she'd need her herbal treatment to shrink the tumors and kill her cancer cells.

Family members said they had bake sales, yard sales and sold everything they had to pay up to $100,000 for bogus treatments. Middlebrooks' sister, Tammie Fleming, even quit her job to work in Chatsworth to be with Paula.

For nearly six months, Middlebrooks drank the herbal treatments daily while joining Daniel for Sunday services.

"It literally looked like mud," said Fleming, 45, of Raeford, N.C., of Daniel's herbal brew. "It was horrible. We were told it would work, that my sister would be cancer-free."

While in church one day, she complained to the physician-minister of intense and enduring pain.

"She said, `The pain is all in your head,"' Fleming recalled, adding that each patient was told to pay up at the clinic each Monday, or be turned down for further treatments.

In 2002, Daniel pronounced Paula Middlebrooks cancer free at a party held for clinic patients. By then, the cancer had in fact spread from her breasts to her bones and brain.

"She brainwashed them. She brainwashed us all," Fleming said. "She sent my sister home cancer free on March 15, 2002. On April 10, Paula passed away."

Another of her victims, Margaret Antwi, who traveled from Africa, was diagnosed with melanoma in 2003. Her daughter, Christiana Kwakye, was channel surfing one night after spending hours by her mother's hospital bed when she came across a testimonial about Daniel's treatment.

Kwakye, 41, of Minneapolis, cobbled together money with her four siblings and paid about $3,500 for a shipment sent from Daniel's offices. Antwi drank the brown liquid and soon after Kwakye called a number and prayed with a woman on the other line.

"At that stage you do anything," Kwakye said, trying to explain why they entrusted Daniel. "I should have known better. My mental state wasn't clear at that time."

Antwi's family bought another round of medicine that cost about $5,000 after Daniel bumped them up to a higher concentration that would be more effective. Antwi died a couple of weeks later at age 62. She had been hopeful Daniel's treatment would work as promised, Kwakye said.

"I struggle with the fact that she (Daniel) wasn't true," she said. "Being a doctor, they do no harm. Why would she do that?"

Other patients traveled to California and stayed at local motels while they were being treated, court documents show.

Prosecutors said Daniel even fleeced other clergy. In late 2003, George McKinney, who founded St. Stephen's Cathedral Church of God in Christ in San Diego, agreed to have his wife, Jean, treated by Daniel. The couple moved into their son's home in Los Angeles, and Jean McKinney took an herbal mixture three to four times a day for her terminal colon cancer.

Daniel also used a heat machine that was supposed to reduce the tumour, authorities said. The couple paid Daniel more than $100,000. Jean McKinney died in June 2004.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Commissions Bronze Statues Of Himself!

0

The former governor of California has commissioned a series of statues of himself to remind the world how he looked in his muscle-bound prime.

The 64-year-old has requested the creation of at least three larger-than-life bronze creations which will stand 8ft tall and weigh 580lbs.

They will be based on a smaller sculpture created in 1980, the year Schwarzenegger won his seventh Mr Olympia title.
The statues all depict him in a classic body-builder pose and have been super-sized to 'heroic' scale, which is one-and-a-quarter times life size.
The first of them will be shipped to a museum dedicated to Schwarzenegger's life at his childhood home in Thal, Austria.

A second will be sent to Columbus, Ohio, where the Schwarzenegger-inspired Arnold Fitness Weekend is held annually.
Schwarzenegger himself will keep the third one but he has discussed the possibility of commissioning four more, said Tim Parks, the owner of Oregon-based TW Bronze, which is making the statues.

Boko Haram's "Operational Commander” And 5 Others Arrested!

0

A MAN who security agents have described as the "operational commander" of Boko Haram has been arrested in Borno State.

Ali Saleh and five others are being held, even as security agencies are trailing more suspected members of the Islamic fundamentalist sect.

But, Saleh's status seems controversial, with the claim in some quarters that the suspect is a mere gun runner.

The government has not ruled out peace talks with the sect, despite its rejection of dialogue.

Saleh was arrested alongside some members of the sect by the Joint Task Force (JTF) after an attack on some buildings on Baga Road in Maiduguri, the state capital.

Governor Kashim Shettima confirmed the arrest of the Boko Haram chiefs yesterday.

He told the Associated Press in an interview that with the arrests," I believe the worst is over".

The governor said Boko Haram maintains a loose command-and-control structure, which allows groups to operate autonomously.

"They operate in some sort of cells, some sort of units that the interlinked, but generally, they take directives from one commander," Shettima said.

The governor said a negotiated peace could be reached between the government and the sect.

But, he warned that those who continue with assassinations and bombings will be hunted down.

A highly placed source, who spoke in confidence, said the attack that led to Saleh's arrest occurred about three weeks ago and the JTF operatives combed the area and arrested the suspects.

"It was during interrogation that the JTF discovered that Saleh is an operational commander of the sect," said the source.

"We have to crosscheck our information on Saleh with the members of the sect in custody with him and with other intelligence networks to ascertain that he is a key member of the leadership of the sect.

"It is safe to say that we have an operational commander of Boko Haram with the JTF and some members of the sect under his command."

Saleh and some of those arrested are said to have confirmed their involvement in some of the bombings in the country.

"We are still interrogating them and we are on the trail of others too," the source said.

Another source, however, said: "I think it is too early to say that Saleh is a Boko Haram leader. Based on local intelligence, some are claiming that he is a notorious gun runner in Borno State.

"Saleh was arrested, following a tip-off by some people.

"And you cannot dispute the claim of the locals because they know themselves. Whatever is the status of Saleh and relationship with Boko Haram, it is the duty of security agencies to tell the nation."

Saudi Woman Sentenced To 10 Lashes For Driving A Car!

0

A Saudi court has sentenced a woman to 10 lashes for challenging a ban on women driving in the conservative Muslim kingdom, Amnesty International said on Tuesday.

The sentence was reported two days after King Abdullah granted Saudi women the right to vote and run in municipal elections. He also promised to include them in the next all-appointed consultative Shura Council in 2013.

"Flogging is a cruel punishment in all circumstances but it beggars belief that the authorities in Saudi Arabia have imposed lashes on a woman apparently for merely driving a car," Philip Luther, an Amnesty regional deputy director, said in an emailed statement.

"Allowing women to vote in council elections is all well and good, but if they are still going to face being flogged for trying to exercise their right to freedom of movement, then the king's much trumpeted 'reforms' actually amount to very little," Luther said.

Two other women are also believed to be facing charges related to driving, the Amnesty statement said.

Najalaa Harriri, one of the women facing charges, told Reuters: "They called me in for questioning on a charge of challenging the monarch on Sunday … I signed a pledge not to drive again, although my driving was a result of necessity, not an act of defiance."

Under Saudi Arabia's strict Islamic laws, women require a male guardian's permission to work, travel abroad or undergo certain types of surgery.

There is no law banning women from driving, but there is a law requiring citizens to use locally issued licences while in the country. Such licences are not issued to women, making it effectively illegal for them to drive.

In May, as pro-democracy protests swept the region, some women in Saudi Arabia called for the right to drive. A campaign dubbed Women2Drive issued calls on social media such as Twitter and Facebook to challenge the ban.

Some women posted on Twitter that they drove successfully in the streets of Jeddah, Riyadh and Khobar. Others said they were stopped by police who later let them go after signing a pledge not to drive again.

On May 22, Manal al-Sharif, who posted a YouTube video of her driving in the streets of Khobar, was arrested. She was later released but her case proved a deterrent for many women.

"I am very upset and disturbed ... I believe that this is a message which intends to tell women that they will not get all their demands," said Naila Attar, an activist and one of the women who organized the Baladi (My Country) campaign, calling for Saudi women to have the right to vote.

"We are now working on a petition to the king ... asking him to stop the lashing order," she said.
