17 Year-Old Girl, Commits Suicide, Because Her Parents Did Not Approve Her Fiance'!

17-year-old, Nafisa Ahmed Haruna of Yakassai area of Kano city has committed suicide. She was alleged to have drunk a poisonous insecticide popularly called "fiya-fi ya" in Hausa.

Nafisa, it was gathered took her life after her mother confronted and scolded her for dating a 20 year-old boy, Sani Musa. It was also gathered that her parents had earlier stopped the relationship on the ground that Musa was unemployed and could not carter for her even if he married her.

Speaking to Daily Trust, a member of the family said Nafisa's mother scolded her all through the previous night, and that she even threatened that there was no way they would allow her get married to Musa no matter how deeply in love they were.

It was further gathered that after Nafisa took the poison around 10am, she was kept at home for hours before she was taken to the hospital where she was confirmed dead.

"The parents thought they could manage the case in secret. It was after all their home therapies failed that they decided to take her to the hospital and on arrival, she was confirmed dead," the source said.

The boyfriend on the other hand, it was gathered also attempted to commit suicide by stabbing himself with a knife, but was prevented by his friends. He however fell on the ground, saying Nafisa died for him.  When Daily Trust visited the Yakassai residence of the deceased shortly after the burial rites were performed, the mother of the deceased said she was not in the mood to speak to the press.

Father of the deceased, Alhaji Ahmed Haruna, who on his part said he has accepted the incident as an act of God, urged well wishers to help him pray for the repose of his daughter's soul.

"I pray for her soul to rest in peace because as a Muslim, I believe that every soul must taste death, so I don't see Nafisa's death as extra ordinary. All I want is for everyone to help me pray for her gentle soul to rest in peace," he said.

Sani was said to have dozed off after he was rushed to the hospital and given an analgesic. He was said to have dated the girl for about two and a half years before the incident occurred.

When contacted, the Kano State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Magaji Musa Majiya said he was not aware of the incident.
