I saw death but God didn’t allow me to die – Paulina, woman bathed with acid by ex-lover!

THIRTY-EIGHT year-old Ms. Paulina Oghenemere, an indigene of Kokori in Ethiope –East Local Government Area of Delta State, fasted and prayed  on  August 27, 2010, to cast away the demon tormenting her life. Yet, it was the devil in her green-eyed  lover, a father of four, simply identified as Mr. Difference,  that knocked on her door at 5 a.m. the next day,  and since that ill-fated Thursday when he poured a substance, believed to be concentrated hydrochloric acid, on  her face, Paulina's life has never remained the same.

From what Sunday Vanguard saw of Paulina, the beautiful woman  who men found irresistible  was a shadow of her  former  self after she was discharged from University of Benin Teaching Hospital, UBTH, Benin City, two months ago. She spent  a year in the acid victims' ward. When Sunday Vanguard visited her home, she fumbled about her sitting room, unable to see, but eager to welcome the team. What  came to mind was man's inhumanity to man.

Today, Paulina, a divorcee and mother of two, needs a lifeline of  N10 million to restore her dignity.

'How I met my ex-lover'
Heart-broken Paulina tells her story, "I divorced my husband with whom I had two kids after irreconcilable differences and incompatibility and relocated to Ujevwu  in Udu Local Government Area of Delta  State. There, I  began selling meat at the Warri Refinery and Petrochemical Company, WRPC, area, a business which sustained and provided for my needs as the kids are with their father.

"One  day, I was conveyed by a motorcycle rider, who identified himself as Mr. Difference Ogba, and  told me  he was resident in Egini, a neighbouring community to Ujevwu. He said he was unmarried. He picked interest in me and I told him I  was  a divorcee. He said he did not mind.

"After about six months, my church members alerted me that Ogba was married with wife and four kids. I trailed  him and got the truth and I told him to leave me alone, but he refused. His wife got wind of our relationship and started coming to abuse me at home.  I  insisted Ogba leave me alone, but he refused. He went to disturb my pastor. The pastor asked him to leave me alone, but he would not listen. They beat me up and took my money (N30,000).  I reported to the leadership of Egini community. They reprimanded him but he would not change his mind."

Escape to Ekrokpe
The victim explained that because of Ogba's  continued threats that if  she didn't  marry him, he won't leave  her  alone, she  packed out to Ekrokpe Community in Ughelli-South Council area." After about three months, he found out where I moved to and he came again, I chased him away but he continued disturbing me until my landlady got tired and  threatened to give me a quit notice,"Paulina said. She continued," "I continued to chase him away any moment he came around and my landlady later joined me in chasing him away, till he stopped."

Fainted for 2 days, woke up in the hospital
"On August 27, 2010, I didn't go to  the market. I fasted and went for our Wednesday prayers in my church (Church of God  Mission). I  prayed to God to chase away Ogba completely from my life.

I went to sleep early that evening as I had my plans for the next day. I wanted to go to the market and sell and, on return, cook and eat my choice soup (banga). But very early in the morning, August 28 , at 5a.m, I heard a sharp knock on my door and the voice of a woman I knew. I was shocked because she resides in Egini. I was wondering how she came to Ekrokpe that early.

Immediately I opened the door,  I was poured something (acid) on my head and face I shouted for help and fainted.  I woke up two days later at UBTH to discover that Ogba was the one who knocked on the door and poured me acid." Ogba fled after the incident.


Without stating it, it was obvious that Paulina had gone through agonizing pains. She told Sunday Vanguard, "I have gone through excruciating pains as I had to undergo three different surgeries. Flesh was cut off from my lap to patch my head and lip. My skull was operated because of the level of burnt when the incident occurred.  I weaved my head a night before but the acid that soaked on my head burnt it. I saw death, but God did not allow me to die. I cursed the day I met Ogba, I will never forgive him.  I regret meeting him and I am still baffled that he did this to me. He neither drinks nor  smokes, I am not aware that he had or has mental problem; so, it is like a bad dream. How I wish it is a dream. I can't see, my eyes are almost blind, I need help, I want to see again, please, I need help."

Battle to save a sister
Paulina's elder sister and member of Deeper Life Bible Church, Mrs. Kate Agbavwe, who resides at Okuokoko community, said, "I was at home on August 28 , 2010,  when early in the morning, our mother came to tell me that my sister was bathed with acid by her lover and she was brought to Kokori. We rushed back there and took her to hospital in Okpara Inland. The next day, she was referred to UBTH.

"At UBTH, life was terrible for my sister as many never believed she will survive, even some relatives' advised that she be left to die. But I stood with her. I had to borrow money to save her life; I borrowed about N500,000 to buy drugs and blood. Things got hard and I had to liaise with my family to sell our land at Kokori. We were billed N665,000 for the bed, treatment and feeding for the one year."

How Ogba was trapped and arrested
According to Mrs. Agbavwe, "When the incident occurred, the landlady promptly reported the incident at the Ekakpamre Police  Station and the case was forwarded to the Otu-Jeremi Divisional Headquarters. The police swung into action and arrested two members of  Ogba  family, who were eventually released on bail with a condition to look for  the suspect in two weeks.

''After a month, I came back from UBTH and a lady from Ogba family came as a spy to inquire if Paulina was dead or alive. I sensed her mission and I told her that Paulina was alive and had been discharged from hospital. The lady then said she was going to meet their family to see how they could come for settlement.

The following day, the family came to my house and I told them the truth that Paulina was in critical condition at UBTH. On hearing my report, the family said they would come back again, but they never did. Back at Egini, Ogba was planning to sell his house so that he could flee from his hideout. The  family told him that he should come so that they would plan on how to settle the matter. Then, they alerted the police who mobilised and laid ambush for him. He was apprehended and taken away. Later, he was transferred to the  state  Police Command in Asaba, but we heard that he is being remanded at the Okere Minimum Prison in Warri."

Save Our Soul
"We are pleading with the government, non-government organisations, Niger Delta Development Commission, Delta State Oil-Producing Areas Development Commission and other public-spirit organisations and persons to come to the rescue of our sister. We were told that corrective surgery can help rescue my sister but the cost  is  too much for us.

We do not have the resources to do it but we call for help. We have been told by the doctor that one of her eyes can be restored through surgery but it will cost so much, we need help so that at least she can see again".

President Goodluck Jonathan Deploys Israeli Security Experts To Protect Aso Rock!

Who will protect the common man?

Following the August 26 suicide bombing of the United Nations House in Abuja, which is the second of such devastating attacks inside the federal capital territory, the seat of power, President Goodluck Jonathan has approved the deployment of Israeli Security experts to supervise the security of Aso Rock.

It was gathered that the decision of the President which was deliberated at length by the National Security Council headed by the National Security Adviser, General Owoye Andrew Azazi, Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Oluseyi Petirin, Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Azubuike Ihejirika, Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Mohammed Dikko Umar, DG SSS, Mr. Ekpeyong Ita, Inspector General of Police, Hafiz Abubakar Ringim and the Chief of Naval staff, Vice Admiral Ola Sahad Ibrahim, was eventually agreed upon as terrorism attacks have shown that international cooperation was needed to tackle the threat.

Due to the fact that the precision, and expertise displayed in both the bombings of the Police force headquarters and the UN house both in Abuja by the Boko Haram group, as claimed, are making security agencies in the country suspect that external assistance in terms of training, types of explosives and financial support (from Al-QAEDA) has been made available to the group.

The new collaborative security stance of government, according to investigations, showed government's realization that the security agencies in the country can not do it alone without assistance from foreign experts, especially those that have tackled the menace for so many years.

Details Of How 'Masterminds Of UN Bombing' Nur And Shekau Run Boko Haram!

THE State Security Service (SSS) Wednesday identified Mamman Nur, an Al-Qaeda linked member of the Boko Haram Sect, as the mastermind of  last Friday suicide bomb attack on the United Nations (UN) building in Abuja, which left 23 people dead and many injured.

It added that Mamman Nur has been declared wanted. Nur,it said, returned recently from Somalia and worked two suspects now arrested.

The violent Islamic sect, Boko Haram, also true to its words, revealed identity of the suicide bomber, last Wednesday named the bomber as a 27-year-old Nigerian, Mohammed Abul Barra.

Doubts on SSS arrests

Even though the SSS announced the capture of two suspects and displayed their pictures, that of Nur had no picture attached to his name. It had no details of his occupation, identity, antecedents. Yet, citizens are required to help in hunting him

Llittle is known about Nur. Even the name given by the Boko Haram spokesperson as the suicde bomber seems fake as a little research can reveal. The name is also alias of Osama bin Laden's bomb making man.

Even western analysts were cautious about the SSS authorities' claims. Peter Sharwood-Smith, Nigeria country manager at risk consultants Drum Cussac, said Nigerian security services were closely tracking Boko Haram.

"The SSS (State Security Service) are reported to have infiltrated Boko Haram to a fairly significant degree, so they may have managed to use intelligence gained from that to find people behind the bombing," he said.

"On the other hand, there's no way of gauging the accuracy of the intelligence they are using, so we don't yet know if they've picked up the right suspects."

Even the UN did not jump into the SSS declaration. Secretary General Ban Ki Moon who addressed the 193-member General Assembly for the first time after he had dispatched two senior UN officials to Abuja, said, "What we know is that this attack was the work of a suicide bomber who rammed a sport utility vehicle at high speed through the exit gates of the UN compound."

There has been growing concern over whether Boko Haram has formed links with extremist groups outside Nigeria, including Al-Qaeda's north African branch and Somalia's Shebab fighters.  Alleged sect members have claimed that they have received training in foreign countries, and analysts point out that their attacks have grown increasingly sophisticated.  The UN bombing marks an increase in the sophistication of Boko Haram's attacks, possibly with more powerful explosives, and an escalation from local to international targets, analysts say. Some suggest Boko Haram was developing global ambitions and may have connected with al-Qaeda's North African wing.

"What's pretty much known is that there have been links made between Boko Haram and al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb. They're not thought to be particularly strong links. The attack on the UN building is the first indication that there might possibly be some influence in terms of targeting coming from al-Qaeda," Sharwood-Smith said. If Nigerian authorities are correct, the group may also have linked up with jihadists in Somalia.

"This latest attack … aimed at the UN indicates an internationalisation of the struggle and bears hallmarks of an al-Qaeda connection," the Eurasia Group wrote on Tuesday.

"While this is a worrying development for investors, including western oil companies, the oil-rich Niger Delta will be much harder terrain for Boko Haram to operate in."

Boko Haram structure

Boko Haram has no specific name for itself, just many names attributed to it by local people. If their name is uncertain, however, their mission appears clear enough: to overthrow the Nigerian state, impose an extreme interpretation of Islamic law and abolish what they term "Western-style education".

Boko Haram appears to have a loose structure. Its activities seem to indicate that leaders are regionalised. For example, seven key chieftains of the dreaded Boko Haram sect have been arrested in Minna, Niger state by some operatives of the State Security Service, SSS. Late Yusuf said his headquarters or branch offices were in Gwange ward, Bulumkutu of Maiduguri.

For Minna, sources said the lead suspect is a Lagos-based businessman, whose name was given as Yusuff. Minna has been his operational base in recent times and was present in the state on two occasions when bombs went off in Suleja. Sources in the administration said six other loyalists of the said kingpin were arrested in a swoop by the security forces. The issue that concerns Boko Haram today is its leadership and structure.

The death of Mohammed Yusuf, their leader till 2009, wounded but did not cripple the group. It also decentralised its leadership and operation as the pattern of its operations killings indicates. Nur and Shekau are involved in a power tussle. No one come out to say he gives any order. It appears that those that bomb in North East are different from those in Suleja and Abuja. In Maiduguri, it is said that 26 fundamentalist groups exist alone with different names and structures.

Boko Haram leadership

Mohammed Yusuf (29 January 1970 – 30 July 2009) was a Muslim sect leader. He was born in Girgir village, in Yobe State, Nigeria. He founded the militant Islamist Boko Haram the group's official name is Jama'atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda'awati wal-Jihad, which in Arabic means "People Committed to the Propagation of the Prophet's Teachings and Jihad" in 2002 and was its spiritual leader until he was killed in the 2009 Nigerian sectarian violence. He was more commonly called Ustaz Mohammed Yusuf.

Imam Abubakar Shekau

Imam Abubakar Shekau was the second-in-command to Mohammed Yusuf, who was killed by the police in July last year after days of fighting between security forces and the sect's followers. The police said in 2009 that Shekau was shot dead in the clashes. But a 25-minute video clip, shot on April 19 and obtained by the media showed Shekau answering questions from a journalist at his hideout believed to be in Maiduguri. In the clip, Shekau is seen wearing a head dress, with an AK-47 gun and a stack of religious books behind him. People who know Shekau very well identified him in a still image captured from the video clip. Proclaiming himself as leader of the sect, Shekau said during the interview that with the death of the former leader, he "being the deputy (to Yusuf), stepped in and assumed leadership to continue in the pursuit of religious knowledge." Shekau was, besides being a second-in-command of the sect, the most influential and feared member of the Boko Haram group.

Mamman Nur

Nur's name has previously circulated as a top figure within Boko Haram and he was considered by some to be the sect's third-in-command during its 2009 uprising in northern Nigeria, put down by a brutal military assault. He was believed to have fled to Chad to escape arrest by Nigerian security agents before moving on to Somalia, according to sources claiming to have been sect members as well as others familiar with Boko Haram. Nur is thought to have returned to Nigeria several weeks ago at the beginning of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. Nur is reported to have long been seen as a high-ranking member of Boko Haram.

Believed to be around 35 years old, Nur was considered third-in-command of  Boko Haram when it launched an uprising in northern Nigeria in 2009 put down by  a brutal military assault which left hundreds dead. Its second-in-command was Abubakar Shekau, believed to be its current  leader. Its head at the time of the uprising, Mohammed Yusuf, was captured  during the assault but later killed when police said he was trying to escape.

According to sources claiming to have been sect members as well as those  familiar with the group, Nur took over temporarily as leader while Shekau  recovered from gunshot wounds suffered during the uprising. Nur is thought to have left Nigeria for Chad along with several other sect  members to escape arrest by security agents. From Chad, he is believed to have moved to Somalia along with some close  allies, according to the sources, before returning to Nigeria several weeks ago  at the beginning of Ramadan.

Rumours have spread that there has been a power struggle between Nur and  Shekau, with Nur and his faction of loyalists contending he was more competent  to lead the sect given his exposure to Somali training and contacts. Nigerian authorities have not confirmed details of the claims surrounding  Nur, saying only that he was "a notorious Boko Haram element with Al Qaeda  links who returned recently from Somalia."

They said investigations had shown that Nur working in concert with two  other suspects masterminded the attack on the UN building that left at least 23  dead.

Nur is said to have been born from Chadian parents in the northeastern  Nigerian city of Maiduguri, where the sect's mosque and headquarters were  located before the 2009 assault left them in ruins.

According to the sources, he studied at a state-run theology school in  Borno state, where Maiduguri is the capital, but dropped out before finishing  and joined Boko Haram. The SSS' claim that Nur just returned from Somalia tallies with a recent statement by the Boko Haram that some of its members had gone for training in the East African country.

Boko Haram's transition

It appears Boko Haram has grown in sophistication and range. From Maiduguri and the North East, the sect moved to Kaduna, Suleja and is now in Abuja. It can attack simultaneously and hit police stations and its national headquarters and at the UN, Abuja. It says it targets Aso Rock. In fact, it has just announced that Kano is its next target. It is in the nation's capital, fully armed, with sophisticated weapons. It plans well its attacks carefully.

It seems also to have infiltrated the security agencies in the country so much that it easily has access to very difficult places. And with this, it is beating the security agencies.

Police Docks 45 Year-Old Man For Impersonating As SAN!

A forty-five-year-old man, Yusuf Agwani, is currently in police custody for presenting himself as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, (SAN).
He did that to secure the bail of a suspect in a police station in Ogun State, who was being held for stealing speakers from a church in Ibafo.

Agwani, who hails from Kaduna State, portrayed himself as a lawyer in his neighbourhood and had been rendering services to unsuspecting clients and swindling them too.
Some of the documents found in his possession were letter headed copies of the Nigerian Police Force, court proceedings, among several letters which indicates that he had been working as a legal agent to landlords and estate agents among others.
Police officers had arrested suspects who stole the church equipment and the person who bought the stolen items. Agwani appeared at the station, challenging their arrest and stating that the police had no right to detain the suspects and had no right to arrest the buyer of the stolen items.

Astonished by his submission, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) ordered an investigation when Agwani insisted that he was a lawyer.

He was asked repeatedly and he affirmatively insisted that was a lawyer. After much interrogation, he was asked to write a statement which must include why he was held, about himself and the school he attended among others.

The Nigerian Compass on Saturday gathered that he sweated for more than 30 minutes, unable to write anything.

He later confessed to the crime and a warrant was secured for a search of his house, where the police found several documents including one that purportedly emanated from the office of the Inspector General of Police, (IGP).

One of the documents, which is a letterheaded paper of his fake chamber has the following details, "Barrister Yusuf, J . Agwani, MSC,ESQ,LLB,(ABU), BL, Abuja office, Supreme Court, 3, Arms Zone, Maitama, Municipal Council, Abuja.

Kaduna Office, Chambers, 106, IBB Crescent, Ungwan Rimi, Kaduna North Council, Kaduna. Notice to Tenant of Owners intention to apply to recover possession"

The letter was signed by him as the Solicitor. Nigerian Compass on Saturday spoke with the suspect and he claimed that all allegations against him were true.

He said that he was a graduate of Architecture but loved the law profession and as such, represents unsuspecting clients. He added that if he did not die in jail after his trial, he would go back to school to study law.

His words: " I want to plead with the police to forgive me. Frustration led me into this. I am an Architect and I can design you as you are standing.

I love the Law profession. That is why I represent people in different capacities. Everything the police said about me is true but if I survive this trial, I shall go back to school to study Law. Please tell members of the public not to cut corners because nemesis has caught up with me."

Gunmen Attack DADDY SHOWKEY At His Residents For The Second Time In 4 Weeks!

Gunmen have again attacked the Ojodu residence of popular Nigerian music star, John Asieno a.k.a. Daddy Showkey, and held him hostage for three hours.

The attack is coming barely a month after a gang of four men raided his home and killed one of his aides.

According to source, yesterday's attack took place at about 1.30 a.m., the gunmen attempted to gain entry into Showkey's residence through the main gate but could not as guard dogs barked ceaselessly to alert the musician and his neighbours.

Sources said the gunmen were defiant and continued to shoot in the air for three hours before they later left in annoyance and promised to return again.

Showkey confirmed the incident and later reported the matter at the Ojodu Police Divisional Headquarters, Grammar School Bus Stop, Ojodu, Lagos, Southwest, Nigeria. Showkey, who is planning to relocate his family, said "I might be forced to take up arms against the attackers because the Ajegunle people will not watch me being killed."showkey said

Before yesterday's attack, four gunmen had on 26 July, 2011, invaded Showkey's residence, killing one of his aides named Wale Suraj.

Policeman Shoots 2 In Auchi Because Of Kerosene!

A policeman shot and injured two persons  at a fuel station in Auchi, on Friday, following an argument between the victims and the station's manager.

The victims, Kabiru Kasimu and Iliasu Kadiri, were shot on the leg and chest respectively. They were rushed to a private hospital in the area.

They said that Kadiri had complained to the manager that the quantity of the commodity sold to him was not up to what he paid for. He was, however, ignored.

The manager's refusal to listen to him led to a disagreement between the two. While the argument was on

According to them, it is the refusal of the manager to listen to his complaint that prompted the argument between the two. While the argument was on, the policeman shot Kadiri on the leg and Kasimu on the chest.

When contacted on the incident, the Auchi Divisional Police Officer, Bolalanle Muritala, confirmed the story and appealed for calm. 

Wittnesses said policemen usually provide security whenever the station sold kerosene.

WEAC releases ORIGINAL and TOKUNBO results in their website to candidates?

THE Federal Government has summoned to Abuja, the Head of West African Examination Council (WAEC) National Office, Dr. Iyi Uwadiae, over the release of two different results for the Senior School Certificate Examination of May/June on its website.

Minister of State for Education, Barrister Nyesom Wike, who invited the WAEC boss to Abuja to explain the circumstances leading to the release of conflicting results, was unhappy that the development threw candidates who sat for the SSCE into a state of confusion last weekend.

Dr. Uwadiae, who accepted responsibility for the mix up, however told the Minister that a panel has been set up to investigate the issue, describing the mistake as "human error."

It is recalled that WAEC had released the first result on August 10, where it said only 472,906 candidates representing 31 per cent obtained five credits including Mathematics and English.

However, Dr. Iyi Uwadiae, said another result that was not "quality checked by the Quality Control Department" was released on its website on August 26.

He denied claims that the system was hacked, just as he explained that it was not a deliberate act by WAEC

German City Uses Prostitution Meter To Tax Prostitute!

The prostitution meter is said to be the first of its kind.

The German city of Bonn has installed a meter to tax prostitutes for soliciting on its streets at a rate of six euros (£5.30; $8.70) per night.

Those who fail to pay face fines or even a ban, and 264 euros were found in the meter when it was first emptied, according to AFP news agency.

Tax has been levied on prostitutes elsewhere but Bonn is the first city to use a meter, a spokeswoman said.

But a prostitutes' rights activist said the scheme amounted to double taxation.

Prostitutes are expected to pay the flat rate, regardless of earnings.

The machine, which looks like an ordinary parking meter, has been installed in an industrial area near the city centre which favoured by prostitutes and their clients.

'Consummation areas'

Isabelle Klotz, a spokeswoman for the city, said they expected to get about 200,000 euros per year from the meter.

"Women who work in brothels also pay the tax but until now it had been difficult to get women on the street to pay," she added.
"Thanks to this new method we will be able to tax them in all fairness with the others."

The 62-year-old, of Highland Terrace, Uffculme, was convicted of 15 rapes and two indecent assaults on two young girls when they were as young as nine.

Former town hall caretaker Brown, who had denied all the charges, was sentenced to 22 years.

The court heard the caretaker and odd job man raped one of the girls hundreds of times over a six-year period, dating back to the 1990s.

'Little secret'

Brown once used "brute force" on the girl and "stupefied her with gin" so that she passed out before he forced himself on her, the court was told.

The victim told the court that Brown had "completely ruined my life".

The jury was told Brown took his victims down to a river where he attacked them, saying "it will be our little secret".

He raped one girl in the town hall at Cullompton, where he worked was caretaker.

The judge, Recorder David Bartlett, said: "You took her there and raped her and bundled her into a cupboard when someone came there."

Prosecutor Simon Laws QC told the jury that Brown's crimes "caught up with him" after his victims grew up and had the courage to speak out.

Sentencing Brown, Recorder Bartlett told him he would serve 12 years in jail, but would remain on licence for a further 10 years when he was free.

UN Demands CCTV Footage Of Bombed Building.

As investigations proceed on penultimate Friday's bombing of the United Nations building in Abuja, the world body has asked the Federal Government to release the Closed Circuit Television footage of the premises before and during the bombing.

Although the UN and United States officials are largely involved in the probe, official UN sources said on Friday that it was the responsibility of the Nigerian security agencies to provide the details to the UN.

This was against the backdrop of complaints by the UN Nigerian Coordinator, Daouda Toure, that the UN officials were merely reading details of the investigations in the newspapers.

Speaking to a Canadian newspaper during the week, the UN Under Secretary-General, Gregory Starr, who was in Nigeria in company with the Deputy Secretary-General, Asa-Rose Migiro, requested that the Nigerian authorities should release the video images to the UN.

"We did have CCTV cameras up," Starr reportedly said, further raising questions on the extent of cooperation between the UN officials and Nigerian security agencies probing the bomb attack.

It was not clear whether the request had been granted, but UN Deputy spokesperson, Eduardo del Buey, told Empowered Newswire on Thursday afternoon that the UN was awaiting developments on the investigations into the bombing from the Nigerian government and would make formal statements later.

Police arrest 74yr old ‘general’ for raping eight-year-old pupil.

The Ekiti State Police Command has arrested a 74-year old retired soldier, Ayoola Aderemi, for allegedly raping an eight-year-old primary school pupil.

The septuagenarian, who was paraded at the Ekiti State Police Headquarters by the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Mohammed Jimoh, identified himself as "a retired army general."

Although some of the residents of Ayetoro-Ekiti, where the man defiled the minor, said the suspect was a retired soldier "he was nowhere near the rank of a general."
The suspect, who denied having penetrative sex with the girl, admitted that he kissed the victim.

He sounded incoherent at a point when he was interviewed by our correspondent, but it could not be ascertained if he was insane or he was just feigning insanity.

The relatives of the victim told our correspondent that the retired soldier raped the girl, who they claimed was treated and discharged from the Federal Medical Centre, Ido-Ekiti.

They claimed that the girl had laceration and her private part became swollen after the incident. She was then admitted at the FMC, where she was treated.
They said that the old soldier sent the girl to go and buy sachet water for him but on arrival, he dragged her into a hidden place, where he defiled her.
The PPRO said investigation into the crime would continue, adding that the case would be painstakingly probed and the suspect would be prosecuted if found culpable.

In a related development, three suspects were paraded by the police for allegedly raping a lady, whose identity was not stated.

The victim, who is from Omuo-Ekiti in Ekiti East Local Government Area, was said to have been raped on August 20, 2011 on her way to the farm.

Bomb scare in Lagos...Security beefed up at Alausa Secretariat, office of SGF.

THERE was panic at the Lagos State Government Secretariat, Alausa, on Thursday, following the rumour of a bomb blast by the Boko Haram sect in the area.

This led to the closure of prominent entrances into the secretariat, including that of the deputy governor, Mrs Joke Orelope-Adefulire.

The development also resulted in heavy human and vehicular traffic within the secretariat as workers and visitors hurried  to flee the scene.

Nigerian Tribune observed that the government had since put stringent security measures in place at the secretariat since five months ago.

Before the April general election, the government introduced new policy to regulate the closing and opening of the main secretariat gate. The gate is now locked at 7.00 p.m. unlike before when it was left open for 24 hours.

Also, no visitor is allowed into the secretariat on weekends, as the main gate is permanently closed while workers on special duty are requested to show their staff identity card to enter the premises.

However, the arrangement to allow workers and visitors to pass through the deputy governor's office was broken on Thursday, as the gate remained shut to prevent any terrorist attack.

According to the police officer, who spoke to Nigerian Tribune at the deputy governor's gate, the closure was an instruction by the state Commissioner of Police, Mr Yakubu Alikali.

The police officer said no vehicle would be allowed to pass through the gate until he received a new order from the state police command.

Would-be Couple, Others Crushed to Death on Benin-Ore Road!

Even before they could formally take the oath of forever loving and living with each other "until death do them part", a couple who was on their way to their hometown in the South-east for their traditional marriage ceremony got crushed to death along with nine others, in what is yet another avoidable highway death. The would-be couple, even in death, have stuck to each other like Siamese twins.

The Benin-Ore road, which has become a veritable death knell for travellers due to the bad state of the road, has witnessed many tragic incidents.
The accident, which occurred around Okada junction of the Benin-Ore-Lagos highway yesterday, also claimed the lives of two innocent children.

The accident reportedly happened at about 4pm when a commercial bus belonging to Peace Mass Transit Company and a truck conveying goods towards Lagos, had a head-on collision. Oftentimes, motorists travelling in opposite directions share the same lane, because of the bad state of the lane they ought to follow. Were it not so, head-on-collision should not happen on dualised highways, which was the case in this incident. 
The remains of the causalities have already been evacuated from the ill-fated bus by men of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) when newsmen arrived the scene of the accident.

According to one of the survivors of the accident, Anthony Ndubuisi, a South African-based footballer who spoke at the Accident and Emergency Unit of University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), the Onitsha-bound bus took off at Ojuelegba bus terminal in Lagos with 17 passengers including two small children belonging to two of the adult passengers.
Ndubuisi, who plays for Jomo Cosmos FC of South Africa, attributed the accident to over speeding and recklessness on the part of the driver. He said that the driver, who allegedly escaped unhurt, was travelling on the opposite lane and was overtaking another vehicle on top speed, and ran into a trailer that was coming on top speed in the same direction.
"I had wanted to travel with another transport company, but they told me that Peace Mass Transit Company was cheaper. I was going to Asaba to finalise arrangements for a trip to Europe where I hope to pursue my career. Just see where I end up," he said.
