Breaking News: Bomb Blast Hit UN Building In Abuja!

This is very shocking as confirmed reports says many people are feared dead after a large explosion tore through a United Nations building in Abuja, the Nigerian capital, levelling one wing of the building.

Witnesses said police and emergency workers were carrying bodies from the building after the explosion, which happened just before 11am.

Police and the wounded thronged around the three-storey building as people began to search for victims.

Alessandra Vellucci, a spokeswoman for the UN in Geneva, said its offices in Abuja had been bombed. She told the Associated Press that there was no word yet on casualties.

Michael Ofilaje, a Unicef worker at the building, said: "I saw scattered bodies. Many people are dead."

Ofilaje told the Associated Press it felt like "the blast came from the basement and shook the building".

The building houses about 400 employees of the UN in Nigeria and the majority of its offices.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for blast, but oil-rich Nigeria faces terrorist threats on multiple fronts. Last year, a militant group from the country's oil-producing Niger Delta detonated car bombs in the capital during Nigeria's 50th independence anniversary ceremony, killing at least 12.

A nation of 150 million people, Nigeria is split between a largely Christian south and Muslim north. In recent months, the country has faced an increasing threat from a radical Muslim sect called Boko Haram, which wants to implement a strict version of Shariah law. The sect has carried out assassinations and bombings, including the June car bombing of the national headquarters of Nigeria's federal police that killed at least two people.

Earlier this month, the commander for US military operations in Africa said Boko Haram may be trying to forge connections with two groups linked to al-Qaida in other African countries to mount joint attacks in Nigeria.

Too Much Salt And Too Little Exercise Bad For Your Brains---Says Researchers!

Too much salt and too little exercise is hard on the heart, but new research suggests it can be hard on the brain, too. A three-year study of more than 1,200 people has linked a salty diet and sedentary lifestyle to cognitive decline in old age.

"It's important for people to know there are things you can do to help protect your brains as you're aging," said study author Carol Greenwood, a nutrition scientist and interim director of the Baycrest Kunin-Lunenfeld Applied and Evaluative Research in Toronto. "You do have some control, and lifestyle is key."

Using data from the Longitudinal Study on Nutrition and Successful Aging, a study of people between the ages of 67 and 84, Greenwood and colleagues found that men and women with the highest daily sodium intake and the lowest level of exercise performed poorer over time on cognitive tests than those with low sodium intake and an active lifestyle. The findings held up even when the researchers controlled for such factors as education, waist circumference, diabetes and overall diet.

"This is the first study to extend the benefits of low sodium intake to brain health in healthy older adults," the authors wrote in their report published in the Neurobiology of Aging.

The study adds to mounting evidence that too much salt can have serious health consequences.


"The reality is that excess sodium affects not only blood pressure but bone health, and probably cardiac health overall," said Dr. David Katz, director of Medical Studies in Public Health at Yale University. "And further, it tends to be a marker of an overly processed diet that is itself harmful in a variety of ways."

Studies are increasingly supporting a role for blood vessel damage in dementia. And although sodium can cause a risky rise in blood pressure, salt's sinister association with cognitive functioning was seen in people with and without hypertension.

Another Reason to Eat Healthy, Stay Active


Although cutting down on salt is a safe move, staying fit might be the more important factor when it comes to protecting cognition with age.

"People who were physically active were protected, regardless of their sodium intake," said Greenwood. "What's important is maintaining the integrity of the cardiovascular system, and the benefits of exercise are going to outweigh any negative effects we see with salt."

People who were sedentary but had look salt intake showed no cognitive decline over three years, the researchers found.

Katz said health-promoting behaviors, like exercise, can "immunize" people to some degree against bad behaviors that inevitably creep in from time to time.

"It stands to reason that people who are more active, and fitter, and thus healthier overall, would better 'withstand' the potential harms of excess sodium than those lacking this immunizing benefit," he said.

Katz cautioned that the study is observational, and does not mean that salt causes cognitive decline. However, the takeaway messages ring true, he said.

"Whether or not dietary sodium directly affects cognitive function in older people, its intake should be restricted to recommended levels, best achieved by eating fewer processed foods, and more foods direct from nature.

Catholic Priest found Drunk At Baptism.

Looks as if this priest needs to go for confession.

After allegedly showing up drunk to a baptism on Saturday at All Hallows Catholic Church in Sacramento, Calif., Rev. Julian Medina was been suspended by the Catholic Diocese of Sacramento, according to a report by Fox 40 News.

The 64-year-old was scheduled to baptize 15 children in front of about 150 people, but instead showed up one hour late, slurred his words and had to be carried out of the church after falling over, CBS 17 Sacramento reports. A worker had to call in a deacon to perform the sacrament.

"We to the families who had to experience this incident," the Rev. Santiago Raudes, a canon lawyer for the Catholic Diocese of Sacramento, told the Sacramento Bee.

The priest has been with the diocese since 1978, but Medina was fairly new with the church.

A diocese spokesperson said officials are still investigating the matter, but that Medina will be offered help if it turns out he has a problem.

CBS 17 interviewed locals in the Tahoe Park neighborhood about the incident, and many say they were surprised about the news.

Patton Township police say the couple was captured on surveillance footage loading a shopping cart and leaving the store without paying.

Phillips and Lurch are each charged with misdemeanour counts and are being held on $2,500 bail.

'Alleged' Poisonous Beans From Boko Haram Create Panic In Port Harcourt!

Consumers of beans in Rivers State are scared of buying the food item in the markets because of alleged "rumour" in the state that Boko Haram had brought contaminated bags of the commodity that would lead to massive deaths when consumed.

Although the State Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr. Emmanuel Chinda has told the public to ignore the text messages warning people not to buy beans in the markets, Vanguard gathered, yesterday, that many consumers of beans are not taking the rumour lightly as they do not want to be used as guinea pigs in the Boko Haram beans scare.

Chinda, however, told those who have proof of the poisoned beans in Rivers markets to "come with the beans". He said neither the Rivers people nor state government has any quarrel with Boko Haram, and as such they have no business wanting to kill people in the state.

One of the text message read "urgent, don't eat beans for now. Boko Haram has poisoned beans sent to Port Harcourt markets, tell others". The commissioner said the messages were the "handiwork of detractors and mischief makers".

At the mile one market, a trader on the commodity simply called Musa said "we cannot sell poisoned beans because it could be traced back to us and you know the consequences of such", acknowledging that he was aware of the text messages.

Ekiti State Bans Children Hawking During School Hours!

The Ekiti State government has outlawed hawking by children of school age during school hours.

While kicking off the registration of school age children into primary one for the 2011/2012 academic session, at the Apostolic Nursery/Primary School, Ijero, on Tuesday, Governor Kayode Fayemi said parents and guardians of any child of school age found hawking during school hours in Ekiti State would, henceforth, be made to face the wrath of the law.

Governor Fayemi, while giving the warning, reiterated the commitment of his administration to a "well-grounded education for children, with emphasis on science and technology."

He said his declaration of free and compulsory education up to senior secondary school was part of his eight-point agenda to meet the 2015 time line on Education for all (EFA) project.

According to Fayemi, the emphasis placed on the education sector was meant to enable the state to "regain and retain its leading position as a reservoir, where knowledge will be a major exportable product to other countries of the world."

Lady Gaga, Backstreet Boys Songs Banned In China!

China has banned websites from featuring 100 songs by artists from Lady Gaga to the Backstreet Boys, a statement on the culture ministry's website said.

The ministry said it aimed to regulate the "order" of the Internet music market, adding songs that "harm the security of state culture must be cleaned up and regulated under the law".

The notice, issued on August 19 and posted on the ministry's website, included American singer Lady Gaga's "The Edge of Glory", "Hair", "Marry the Night" and "Bloody Mary".

It did not explain why the songs were banned but China routinely censors anything it considers politically sensitive or offensive.

While "Bloody Mary" ends with the line "Oh, liberdade, mi amor (Oh, freedom, my love)", "Hair" includes the lyrics "This is my prayer/ That I'll die living just as free as my hair".

Boy-band The Backstreet Boys, American R&B singer Beyonce, Canada's Simple Plan and British pop group Take That, all had songs on the list whcih is the third to be issued by China's government.

Asian artists with songs banned included Taiwan's Chang Hui-mei, who previously ran foul of the Beijing government after singing the Taiwan anthem at the inauguration of former Taiwanese president Chen Shui-bian in 2000.

China, which regards Taiwan as part of its territory, temporarily banned her from mainland performances and pulled her product advertisements.

Authorities have reportedly blocked some foreign bands from performing live in China, or scrutinised set lists in advance to nix songs considered offensive.

Since 2010, China has required all songs posted on music websites to receive prior approval, a move the government said was partly aimed at rampant piracy.

South African Court Slams Fresh Charges On Henry Okah!

South Africa on Wednesday slammed on Henry Okah, a fresh charge of trying to cause harm to an internationally protected person.

The case is related to the Oct. 1, 2010 Independence Day bombings in Nigeria.

According to the charge at the High Court in Johannesburg, the internationally protected person in the case relates to President Goodluck Jonathan who was at Eagles Square on Oct 1, 2010.

Jonathan attended the 50th independence anniversary when explosives went off in two cars parked nearby.

State counsel, Shaun Abrahams, unveiled the charge as part of a five-count charge Okah is to face as he confirmed the case would move from the Magistrate's Court where the case came up, to South Gauteng High Court, Johannesburg for trial on Jan. 30, 2012.

Abrahams, who is expected to continue the prosecution at the High Court, served Magistrate Hein Louw a letter informing him of the notice of trial as well as the charges against Okah.

He also presented the proof of indictment and list of witnesses and urged Louw to inform Okah of the date of trial.

Abrahamssubmitted a list of 55 witnesses, adding that the number could increase once he received additional information from Nigeria.

Mr Rudi Krause, Okah's counsel, said he had nothing against the transfer of the case to the High Court.

Krause said he would streamline the list of witnesses filed by the State with Okah's.

He had at the last adjourned date presented a list of 103 witnesses Okah wanted to call as witnesses, promising to furnish their addresses later.

Krause also frowned at the manner in which Okah was being held, describing it as "inhumane".

He said Okah was being held in isolation in a prison that could take between 44 and 48 prisoners and was being denied medical attention.

Krause stated that in spite of the endorsement of his warrant of detention when the case came up last, Okah had not been able to have a surgery on his back and had also developed a problem with his teeth.

He said efforts to get the Department of Correctional Services to attend to him had proved futile with matters getting to a head when he was told that there was a report that indicated there was no need for such operation.

Krause said Okah was appealing against the manner in which he was being held in isolation and wanted to be detained in humane conditions.

"He is in complete isolation, has only one visit per week and literally locked up in the cell for 23 hours daily," Krause said, explaining that he was allowed to go out and exercise in a courtyard for one hour daily.

Louwin his judgment, informed Okah that he would face summary trial at the High Court from Jan. 30, 2012 and ordered his remand in custody.

He endorsed his warrant of detention adding that he should be given medical attention.

He, however, noted that reports which Abrahams had tendered before the court indicated that he was not cooperating with officials in their bid to give him the attention.

The new charges lined up against Okah include engaging in terrorist activity in relation to the Warri bombings of March 15, 2010 and an alternative count of conspiring to do so.

The counts also include that of engaging in terrorist activity in relation to the Oct. 1, 2010 Abuja bombings and an alternative count of conspiring to do so.

The counts also include delivery, placement and or detonation of an explosive device causing death and serious bodily harm in relation to the Warri and Abuja bombings and alternative counts of conspiracy to do so.

Okahwas arrested in Johannesburg on Oct. 2, 2010 and brought to the court on Oct. 4, 2010.

He has since been in custody, having lost bids to be released on bail.

Another Deadly Cargo Arrives Lagos Port!

THE Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, yesterday, at the Tin-Can Island Port intercepted a 40" foot container containing arms and ammunition and arrested one Mr Niyi Osunsanya, a Customs agent contracted to clear the cargo.

Speaking to newsmen on the development, Customs Area Comptroller, CAC, of Tin Can Island Customs, Mr. Charles Edike, said the container with number TUCU 9598802 contained two vehicles— a Range Rover Sports and a Chevrolet Express bus—which were brought in from the United States.

Edike said the security items found in the container were weapons that could cause damage to Nigerians, adding that with the arrest of the agent, it will not take long before the importer will be apprehended.

Beides the hand gun and cartridges found inside the container, other security items uncovered include several packs of tear gas, a long torch that has a camera, Naval caps, military boots, United States Army barge and other security barges as well as military belts.

25-Year-Old Almajiri Commits Suicide!

A 25-year-old Qu'ranic student, Auwal Bawa, yesterday committed suicide by hanging himself in his bedroom at around 2 pm in Nasarawa 'A', Anguwar Mahauta, Minna, Niger State for reasons yet to be ascertained.

Bawa, who was an almajiri hailed from Tungar Giwa in Shanga Local Government Area of Kebbi State and was said to have come to Minna at his tender age in search of Qu'ranic education.
According to an eye witness, who doesn't want his name in print, on the fateful day he searched around for the late Bawa to send him for an errand, but as he could not see him around he decided to look for him in his room.

He said at round 2 pm he pushed the door of his (Bawa's) room which was simply shut from behind and found him dead while his corpse was dangling from the rope he used in hanging himself from the ceiling fan of his one bedroom apartment.

He also said the deceased (Bawa) was a type of a person that could remain unfriendly for a whole day when annoyed by any of his girlfriends.

Late Auwal Bawa, who was otherwise called Akame was said to have drank Ota pia-pia, a poisonous substance a day before he committed the suicide. The suicide victim was also reported to have been in love with a girl that was simply identified as Balkisu, who he had proposed to marry.
