The new Central Hospital, a 109 year old building under re-construction in Benin City, Edo State, has collapsed trapping workers under the rubble.
The mishap happened at the construction site of the Hospital complex. The Edo state government said it occurred after a crane collided with a freshly constructed beam, affecting a section of the multi-storey structure.
Officials of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said six workers have been rescued from the rubble. They said that search and rescue will continue to rescue the other workers trapped under the rubble.
As at the time of this report, rescue workers were still searching frantically to free the last man, an expatriate.
The collapsed building was being constructed by Sincies Chimentin Limited, an Italian firm.
The building "is part of an infrastructural renewal programme initiated by the Adams Oshiomhole administration to upgrade the hospital constructed originally in 1903," Louis Odion, the governor's spokesperson said.
Central Hospital is a government hospital located in the serene centre of Benin, on Sapele road, few kilometers from the City Center.See photos of the collapsed building below:
