Woman Gives Birth In Coma

A MOTHER gave birth while in a coma and awoke a fortnight later with no memory of even being pregnant.

Emma Mynors, 23, was rushed to hospital after falling unconscious with pneumonia and suffering two strokes.

Two weeks into the coma she began to go into labour prematurely at 29 weeks.

Nurses carrying out a routine examination at Colchester General in Essex saw the baby’s head had begun to emerge. Miraculously, Emma delivered Amy naturally.

When she awoke two weeks later hospital staff handed her 3lb 5oz Amy and explained what happened. Emma said: “The nurses were congratulating me. I didn’t know what they were talking about.

“I remembered I was married and had a son but had no idea I was pregnant. I hadn’t consciously pushed or had a contraction, yet my little girl was here and healthy. It seemed like a miracle.

“Even when unconscious, my body knew what to do.”

There are just one or two such cases every ten years.

During a coma, hormones that trigger labour are still active. But the major problem is caused when the woman is unable to push — making Amy very lucky to be alive.

After a month in hospital she and Emma are at home with hubby Dean, 27, and son Conrad, three, in Clacton-on-Sea, Essex.
