INEC Suspends Voters Registration In Edo State, Until After Governorship Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has postponed the on-going voter‘s registration exercise in Edo state until after the governorship election, scheduled for the 14th July.
The national chairman of the commission Professor Attahiru Jega made the announcement, after meeting with 35 representatives of seven political parties and their governorship candidates that will be vying for the election.  The meeting was at the national headquarters of the commission in abuja.
According to Prof. Jega, the development was in reaction to the spate of allegations and counter- allegations, and state of lawlessness that now threatens the peaceful and credible conduct of the governorship election.
Some of the candidates for the governorship election commended INEC’s decision, ahead of the poll.
The candidate for the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and governor of Edo state, Adams Oshiomhole, who was present at the meeting, said the decision is a welcome development while the People’s Democratic Party’s (PDP) candidate, Major-General Charles Airhiavbere, also applauded the postponement saying by the move, INEC  has tried to address the fears of all the political parties.
