Cross River State Goverment To Introduce Chinese Language In Public Schools

Cross River State government has unveiled plans to introduce the teaching of Chinese language in its public schools.

Commissioner for Education, Prof. Offiong E Offiong made the disclosure to newsmen shortly after making his presentation at the ongoing state retreat at Obudu Ranch Resort. He assured that the move is borne out of desire to reposition the state to tap into the phenomenal socio-economic revolution in China.

“In the next 10 years, China will emerge as a world superpower given its population indices and leading role in Information and Communication Technology revolution, amongst other very critical fields of human endeavour,” he predicted. “It will only be proper to take this proactive step to key into the emerging force to remain relevant.”

As a deliberate effort, the commissioner further disclosed that the state government has already written to the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria for possible collaboration to execute a trainers’ programme with the establishment of a Chinese Language Centre in Calabar.

It's good to learn chinese language, but learning it for the sake that Chinese is turning superpower is nonesense. English langauge will ever remain global language, the world's lingua franca, even the Chinese themselves learned and speaks English as a second language, majority of schools in China teach English language. The state should improve the teaching pattern of English language in the schools instead of spend extra money for learning Chinese. I think it is just a way of wasting public funds. K. Okofoh
