IN a bid to decongest prisons in the State, the Lagos state Government has introduced non – custodial sentences in the form of community service, probation and restitution.
The Attorney General (AG) and Commissioner for Justice in Lagos state, Mr Ade Ipaye made this disclosure at a ministerial press briefing. He said that Lagos state ministry of justice has embarked on a project to institutionalize community service orders as an additional sentencing option.
Ipaye stated that to give effect to this law, the ministry has secured the services of community service officers who will supervise offenders sentenced to community service. Adding that they are also organizing training workshops to build the capacity of magistrates in the state and other related staff to implement the relevant positions of the Administration of criminal Justice in Lagos.
