Lagos State Bans Street Trading And Hawking!

Lagos State government, on Tuesday, banned street trading and hawking across the metropolis, describing the order as one of the measures taken to curb crime.

The chairman, State Task Force on Environmental and Special Offences Unit, a Superintendent of Police, Mr Bayo Sulaimon, said this at a news conference in his office in Alausa, Ikeja.

He said, "the government is now out to enforce all environmental laws to the letter. Lagos is not a jungle where anybody does what he likes. As a result of this, we are banning street trading and hawking in the metropolis."

According to Sulaimon, many of the street traders are into crime but pretend to be selling products to the public, adding that, "they carry short guns to rob innocent people of their belongings while hawking on the roads."

The Task Force boss, specifically mentioned areas such as Bank Anthony, Third Mainland Bridge and Oshodi as den of notorious criminals who disguise as traders and hawkers, warning that henceforth, nobody should be seen parading as a trader in these areas.

He disclosed that 25 traders had been arrested at the third mainland bridge for violating the state environmental law and that they would be prosecuted by the law.
