16-Year-Old Sierra Leonean Girl Murdered With An Afro Comb In London Over Boyfriend

1
Julie Sheriff was stabbed in the skull with an afro comb
A 15-year-old girl murdered a teenage rival with a steel afro comb because she spread gossip about her, the Old Bailey heard on Monday.
The alleged killer is said to have plunged the sharpened end of the comb into the skull of policeman's daughter, Julie Sheriff, 16, after spotting her on her south London ‘territory’.
Julie remained in a coma for 19 weeks following the attack but never regained consciousness and died in hospital on September 21 last year.
Julie’s family moved to Britain in 2006 from Sierra Leone, West Africa, where Julie’s father, Raouf, was a police officer.
Jonathan Turner, QC, prosecuting, said the two girls ‘actively disliked’ one another by the time of the attack on May 7.
‘What lay behind this antagonism, the crown cannot say with any certainty,’ he said.
‘But there seems to have been a row brewing between them over certain allegations that Julie had been making about the defendant, and some boyfriend or boyfriends of hers.’

He said the gossip had been spread via the mobile phone network using ‘telephonic sites’.
The defendant, now 16, spotted Julie close to a William Hill betting shop in Falcon Road, Clapham, and angrily snapped: ‘What do you think you are doing in Clapham? Why are you here?’
Mr Turner said: ‘There seems to have been some territorial issue between them.’
Just moments after the chance meeting, the defendant was allegedly seen to thrust an overarm blow at Julie’s head.
A boy who witnessed the attack described it sounding ‘like the noise it makes when we kill a goat back home’, the court heard.
‘He described [the 16 year-old] as reaching into her bag and pulling out a pin-tail comb and stabbing Julie with it not once but twice,’ Mr Turner said.
‘The first one was to Julie’s collarbone, but it barely penetrated, and it was the second blow that went into her making a noise, he said, like a noise it makes when we kill a goat back home.’
Jurors heard a friend of the victim only saw one blow but did not notice a weapon.

Within seconds of the attack Julie was said to have complained of a sore head and collapsed against the side of the betting shop.
At hospital a CT scan showed ‘substantial swelling of the brain and internal hemorrhage deep with in the brain,’ said Mr Turner.
She underwent a series of operations without improvement before suffering a cardiac arrest 20 weeks later on September 21.
Passing a comb of the same type said to have been used in the killing to members of the jury to inspect, the barrister added: ‘Who exactly brought it to the scene will be one of the issues for you to decide.’
Police arrested the alleged killer as she walked to her home in Pimlico in the early hours the next day.
She is said to have initially given officers a false name, before asking: ‘Is it about the fight yesterday? I don’t think I did anything wrong.’
Upon searching her, police found a metal comb in her handbag which was later found to have only her own DNA on it.
‘This does not necessarily preclude it from being the murder weapon,’ said Mr Turner.
‘After all, she had a couple of days to wash it clean.’
In a taped interview with police the alleged attacker refused to answer police questions.
The girl instead read a pre-prepared statement in which she described taking a bus to Clapham Junction station and then meeting a friend in the street.
She said: ‘I noticed another girl, and I do not get on with the other girl.
‘She has been abusive to me in the past, and she became very aggressive and was abusing me.
‘The second girl had a comb in her hand and she was waving and pointing it at me in an aggressive manner.
‘I feared for me safety - I was convinced she was going to stab me.
‘In self-defence, I took the comb from her and jabbed it at her. If I hadn’t taken it from her, I’m convinced she would have stabbed me with it.’
After analysing her Blackberry mobile phone, officers found a message sent shortly after the attack reading: ‘Basically I was in Junction, yeah, and I see some girl that I hate, like I actually hate her with a passion.
‘And I kind of stabbed her...’
Dressed in a khaki top, black cardigan, and black trousers, the defendant, who cannot be named for legal reasons, looked down and spoke softly to confirm her identity.
She sat flanked by three security guards in the dock, while her parents watched on from the public gallery.
A jury of six men and six women were earlier selected to try her case.
Judge Nicholas Cooke QC, his clerk, and the barristers in the case have removed their wigs in an effort to make the courtroom appear less intimidating for her.
The defendant, from south London, denies murder and the trial is expected to last two to three weeks.
The trial continues.

Nigeria Begins Diesel-Fuel Imports From Niger Republic

0
Nigeria has begun to import refined diesel fuel from Niger, its northern neighbour, oil market traders and truck drivers said on Monday.

Fuel (gas) stations in the northern city of Katsina on the border with Niger stock diesel imported from Niger’s Soraz refinery in Zinder, 80 kilometres (50 miles) from the border with Nigeria.

“We have imported 90 trucks of diesel from Niger in the past four months in three batches of 30 trucks each, Lawal Dahiru Mangal, a fuel market trader in Katsina said.
“We secured import licence from the (Nigerian) government for the importation of diesel from the Soraz refinery in Niger which we supply fuel stations in Katsina and neighbouring towns”, said Mangal of MD Mangal petroleum company.

Nigeria, world’s eighth largest oil producer, relies on fuel imports from some foreign countries to meet domestic demands as its four refineries, with a combined installed capacity of 445,000 barrels per day, are underperforming.

They have been grounded for years due largely to corruption and mismanagement.
It produces about 2.2 million barrels of crude per day which it exports and imports refined fuel.
Niger-refined diesel is cheaper than the one Nigeria imports from other countries, Mangal said.

A litre of Niger-imported diesel sells at 160 naira (one dollar) in Katsina compared to 170 naira it sells in other parts of the country.

“We source diesel from Mangal petroleum which imports its consignment from Niger,” Abddullahi Maikaita, a fuel attendant at a filling station in Katsina said.

In 2000 Nigeria removed its subsidy on diesel.

Last November, Niger opened its first refinery in Zinder following the discovery of oil in Agadem, 700 kilometres east of its capital Niamey with a daily production capacity of 20,000 bpd.

Man Stones Girlfriend To Death

1
A young man, Mr. Lawrence Ette, has been accused of stoning his 23-year-old girlfriend, Miss Rosaline Christopher, to death.
An eyewitness, who is the landlady of the deceased, Miss Dorothy Bassey, said Rosaline had a brawl with her boyfriend, before he allegedly killed her.

The tragedy was said to have occurred penultimate Sunday at 13, Academy Street, Calabar, Cross River State.
Bassey said Rosaline, who lived with her aged mother and siblings, had been in a relationship with Ette for a while.
She said because of the frosty relationship between the lovers in recent time, Rosaline’s mother stopped Ette from visiting her daughter.
“But even with the instruction from the old woman, Ette kept sneaking in to see the girl particularly at night,” she added.

It was learnt that during one of such visits penultimate Sunday, there was a misunderstanding between the lovers, which prompted the girl to ask Ette to leave.

Bassey said, “Rosaline did not know that Ette took her phone away. After some time, her younger sister, Nne, wanted to use the phone only for her to find out that the phone was missing.
“That was when she discovered that Ette had gone with the phone. Nne decided to go and look for Ette so that she can get her sister’s phone.
“But while Nne took the main exit and headed for Target Street, Ette sneaked into the house through the back door from Webber Street and Nne missed him.”

It was gathered that when Ette returned to the house, an argument ensued between the lovers resulting in a fight.
“She did not scream while they were struggling because she wanted to send him away quietly without attracting her mother’s attention but that was her mistake as Ette stepped out of the room, got a stone and hit her with it,” the landlady said.

She said when he realised that the girl was dead; Ette allegedly attempted to dispose of the body by throwing it over the fence.
Bassey said, “He carried her on his shoulder towards the backyard and was trying to throw the body over the fence. When the girl’s mother heard a strange noise at the backyard, she asked Nne to find out what it was.
“But when Nne got to the backyard, she saw Ette carrying her sister on his shoulder. Immediately he sensed that he had been sighted, he abandoned the corpse and fled.

“Since it was dark, a neighbour brought out a torch and during a search, Rosaline’s corpse was found inside the gutter.”

PUNCH Metro learnt that her corpse had been taken to the mortuary at the General Hospital, Calabar.
One of Ette’s neighbours at 10, Anating Street, Calabar, who craved anonymity, said the suspect “hurriedly came here and packed some clothes into a bag and left and has since not been seen.”
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr. John Umoh, said the matter which was reported at Atakpa Police Station was being handled by the homicide unit of the police.

“It will not be long before we get him, the advisable thing for him to do is to come out of hiding now,” the PPRO said.

United Nations Help Evacuate 326 ‘Stranded’ Nigerians From Libya

1
The International Office for Migration (IOM), a United Nations body has helped in repatriating 326 “stranded” Nigerians, including about a dozen children from Libya.
They were brought back home from Libya this weekend, an official statement said on Sunday.

They arrived in Lagos international airport in two batches. Airport officials said that some of them had been tortured or imprisoned by the new government in Tripoli before they were evacuated.
“At the weekend, 326 stranded Nigerians were evacuated to the country from Libya through the effort of International Office for Migration (IOM), a United Nations body,” the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said.
It is unclear if they were deported.
Libyan authorities have in the past years expelled thousands of Nigerian illegal immigrants and those with criminal records.
These Nigerians must have gone through quite an ordeal during the crisis period and power tussle in Libya. During that period, there were calls for help from Nigerians stranded in Libya
‘Airport officials said that some of them had been tortured or imprisoned by the new government in Tripoli before they were evacuated’
It reminds me of this video I watched some time ago of a terrified group of Nigerian men pleading their innocence in front of anti-Gadhafi forces. The sad thing about their story is that they were trapped in Libya in an attempt to get to Italy for a better life. The evident fear written on their faces, seeing grown men cry for their lives was really chilling. As dangerous as the tales are of what Nigerians go through while passing through Libya in search of these ‘greener pastures’, more and more people still take such dangerous routes.
I guess its welcome back home for them and thanks to the International Office for Migration who helped in evacuating them from Libya.
What do you think about think about the risk Nigerians face while trying to get to European countries by road through Libya? Is it really worth it?

I Won’t Congratulate Governor Adams Oshiomhole... General Charles Airhiavbere

0
After several hours of silence, the Edo State governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Major General Charles Airhiavbere (rtd) on Sunday said he would not congratulate Governor Adams Oshiomhole of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) on his re-election.

Airhiavbere who polled 144,235 votes said Oshiomhole had earlier faulted the electoral process before his declaration by the same body on Sunday.
In a chat with journalists on Sunday night at his Benin residence, Airhiavbere who thanked the people for their support during the election said it could have been easy for him to congratulate Oshiomhole but that Oshiomhole pre-empted the system that brought him.
He said,
“I won’t fully comment on the election because the acclaimed winner had earlier in the day about 1pm condemned the electoral system. He condemned the chairman of INEC for the process that has not ended".
“That process at the end of the day declared him the winner. I will observe in the next few days before I make my comment.
“The election of yesterday (Saturday) has come and gone. I want to seize this opportunity to thank all the people of Edo State for coming out en masse to make yesterday’s exercise the most peaceful election ever experienced in Edo State. Goldie Cries Her Way Out Of Big Brother Stargame

5
Nigeria's representative in the 2012 Big Brother stargame and United Nations Youth Ambassador, Goldie Harvey  has been evicted from the house. The eviction of Goldie did not come as a surprise to many people.
Goldie has arguably had the most emotional stay in the House, all thanks to her tumultuous relationship with the Masai warrior, Prezzo. In the days leading up to the Eviction Show, Goldie has cried a river of tears and after a horrible fight with Prezzo this afternoon, Goldie told Big Brother she does not want to spend the last three hours of her stay in the House, fighting with the love of her life.

Before the results of this week's Evictions were released, Keagan had to face his fellow Housemates and reveal his 'Save and Replace' decision. The South African Housemate told a crushed Kyle that he had been put on the chopping block. The tension in the House before the big reveal was palpable. The two lovers stood as far apart from each other as they could and when it was announced Goldie would be leaving, the Nigerian Housemate simply walked out.

Prezzo then followed her to the big Eviction Doors and had one final conversation. "I'm sorry about earlier. Can I get a hug?" Goldie seemed to mull over her decision for a bit, but then relented.

As expected, Goldie bawled on stage, after seeing a video of the people who had Nominated her.

Syria Conflict Is Now A Full-Blown Civil War... Red Cross

0
The International Committee of the Red Cross said Sunday it now considers the conflict in Syria to be a full-blown civil war, meaning international humanitarian law applies throughout the country.

Also known as the rules of war, international humanitarian law grants parties to a conflict the right to use appropriate force to achieve their aims, and the Geneva-based group's assessment is an important reference for those parties to determine how much and what type of force they can use. The assessment also can form the basis for war crimes prosecutions, especially if civilians are attacked or detained enemies are abused or killed.
"We are now talking about a non-international armed conflict in the country," ICRC spokesman Hicham Hassan said.
Previously, the ICRC had restricted its assessment of the scope of the conflict to the hotspots of Idlib, Homs and Hama, but Hassan said the organization had determined the violence has spread beyond those areas.
"Hostilities have spread to other areas of the country," Hassan told The Associated Press. "International humanitarian law applies to all areas where hostilities are taking place."

US Episcopal Church Approves Same-Sex Marriage

3
The U.S. Episcopal Church on Tuesday approved a liturgy for clergy to use in blessing same-sex unions, including gay marriages in states where they are legal, becoming the largest U.S. religious denomination to approve such a ritual.
Delegates to its triennial convention voted 171-50 to approve the liturgy, titled "the Witnessing and Blessing of a Lifelong Covenant." Episcopal bishops had voted overwhelmingly on Monday in favor of the text.

The U.S. Episcopal Church, part of the worldwide Anglican Communion, is the 14th largest U.S. religious denomination, with about 2 million members, according to the National Council of Churches.

The proposed blessing will be introduced in early December and will be evaluated over the next three years, according to a church spokeswoman, Nancy Davidge.

The resolution does not mention the word "marriage" and it does not alter the church's standard liturgy for a marriage between a man and a woman, but offers an alternative liturgy for blessing same-sex couples.

The measure also gives bishops of the church discretion in the use of the liturgy and says no one should be punished for choosing not to use it.

Reverend Bonnie Perry of Chicago, who supports marriage between same-sex couples, said she was pleased by the decision. "For me it is a window on the Promised Land. It's not the Promised Land," she said. "The most important part of a marriage is the blessing."

Nigeria First Lady, Patience Jonathan Responds To Outrage Over Permanent Secretary Appointment

0
Following the widespread outrage over the appointment of the first lady of Nigeria, Patience Jonathan as a Permanent Secretary in Bayelsa State, Mrs. Jonathan has said she will be performing her duties as a Permanent Secretary but with no salary earnings.
Speaking through her spokesperson, Ayo Osinlu in an interview with Premium Times, Mrs. Jonathan said she will not be relocating to Bayelsa state to perform the duties of a permanent secretary, in line with her new appointment.
“She is on leave of absence,” Mr. Osinlu said. “She is not going to function in the office of the permanent secretary in Bayelsa state.”
Ms. Jonathan however, is apparently delighted at the appointment as her spokesman argued that she had no cause to publicly accept or decline the appointment.
“It is a civil service position,” Mr Osinlu said. “She is a staff of the Bayelsa state civil service.”

Mrs Jonathan will also not collect any pay for the office, Mr Osinlu said insisting that “It will be illegal for her to draw salary from the office.”
The president’s wife, who left the Bayelsa state civil service 13 years ago after her husband became the deputy governor of the state, was elevated to the position, usually reserved for senior civil servants.
However, Governor Seriake Dickson said he made the appointment in line with the constitutional powers conferred on his office because she was on “leave of absence” and not retired from the state’s civil service.

What do you think about her response?
